Gremlins was already a pretty dark movie to begin with, but the original concept was a lot darker. Not only were the titular creatures more murderous than mischievous, but cute little Gizmo was going to turn into one as well. However, Spielberg felt that the audience would love Gizmo too much to see that happen to him, so they made his gremlin form a separate character, Stripe.
