As a cadet, Saavik was assigned to the Starship Enterprise, where she served as the ship's navigator. Saavik was aboard the Enterprise in 2285, during the Project Genesis crisis. The highly controversial experimental project was created to develop a way to turn uninhabitable planets into environments suitable for life. The Genesis Device was sued to disintegrate a planet, then reform the particles into a habitable environment. Although promising, the project was abandoned due to the highly unstable protomatter necessary to power the Genesis Device. Saavik showed interest in observing the planet created in the experimental project. She later transferred to the U.S.S. Grissom to more closely study the Genesis planet.
