Smoke was Sub-Zero's best friend in the Lin Kuei clan. When the Lin Kuei ninjas were turned into cyborgs, Smoke and Sub-Zero refused, but Smoke was captured when helping Sub-Zero to escape, and was turned into a cyborg.
