Virgil Hawkins was an avid comic book reader who found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, when the police dropped a special gas in an area of Dakota City to stop gang violence. The survivors, including Virgil, got superpowers and the event was known as the "Big Bang". Inspired by his love of comics, Virgil became a hero under the name Static. He can generate and manipulate electromagnetic energy.
