In the Marvel Universe, the Fallen One is depicted as the first Herald of Galactus, created by Galactus in his early attempts to find a suitable servant. Unlike later Heralds who gain their power from cosmic radiation, the Fallen One was imbued with dark energy. However, the Fallen One proved to be cruel and dangerous, leading Galactus to imprison him.

Over time, the Fallen One managed to escape and repeatedly attacked Galactus, but was always defeated. Eventually, the hero Star-Lord imprisoned the Fallen One in the inter-galactic prison known as the Kyln. However, the Fallen One later escaped when the Kyln was destroyed during a conflict involving Thanos and the entity known as the Maker.

After his escape, the Fallen One encountered Galactus once again, but Galactus simply teleported him back to Thanos to deal with. Thanos then defeated the Fallen One by tricking him into igniting a gas giant, rendering him unconscious. Thanos subsequently mentally enslaved the Fallen One, forcing him to serve as Thanos' Herald.
