Ironclad of the U-Foes (Marvel Legends) Custom Action Figure
Custom #:31888
Name:Ironclad of the U-Foes
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:Marvel Legends
Creator:Cosmic Fantasy Customs
Date Added:August 14, 2011
Base Figure:House of M Hulk
Height:8.00 inches
Would like to start off saying that the paint was inspired by Santanaz's silver surfer, could not find what he used, so went out on a limb. This is one of my favorite Hulk villians and one of his greatest team foes, Ironclad. If you don't know their backstory, they did research into the Fantastic Four's mission and decided to intentionally fly into cosmic rays for longer than the FF4. When their ship crashed back down to earth they had been changed and given new abilities. Ironclad is one mean mother and can go toe to toe with the hulk, more so than thing. Well to get to the receipe, I used a House of M Hulk for the fig except the head is a Mr. Fixit. I added sculpt to the waist, belt, legs, arm bands and head. Then I tried something completely different than normal and used an auto silver/chrome spray paint. I will never do this again, not because it did not work, but had 2 silver surfers I was working on and it rained on them before they finished and they will never be the same. This is a powerful paint and does not come off easily, so if you make a mistake, sorry (very unforgiving). As usual views, comments and criticism appreaciated, thanks for the support.

I really want to express my thanks and how honored I am at your comments, not only here, but on your killer lobo, it truly means a lot. he is one of my favs and with some of my new projects, I have learned to never say never now. I have been thinking I should try again, to make him bigger. I do have a silver surfer project that will make me use the paint again, so I will get the art of using it down pat and you will see an even brighter day. thanks again.

This one's so good I keep looking at it for inspiration. I will attempt this style of paint on a future custom based on your excellent silver chrome Ironclad.

thanks, really honored and humbled to hear that. I know that yours will be awesome, you really been cranking out some great pieces. only advice other than using a cloth for buffing is sand, dremel, whatever must be done for preventing paint rub, this paint does not do well with too many coats. you will lose detail.

thanks bud, just some advice the coating on the silver surfer affects the spray paint though. so I would use a primer to help, lost a few surfers experimenting with this.

Hi there,
You mentioned that one thing that helped was to get a soft cloth and buff the fig to get excess spray dust off and it also gives it a better sheen.
Is the buffing done in between coats?
Thank you

yes I did buff inbetween coats and after, but I gave buffing and new coats 24 hours to dry. basically took about 4-7 days of coats, buffing and checking rubbing. hope I can help.

The paint looks beautiful and even. I had tried that before also with the solid chrome look, but the result was sticky and dull because I had tried to put a gloss coat on over it after I had sprayed it. So, I had to go back to the drawing board and ended up just detailing the figure and trying to paint it with hand effects and airbrush to make it have the illusion of chrome...lol! I love the solid chrome look, though!

with the trouble of nature I had making this, I would have went your way if I had that type of skill, but tried this. I figured sealing the fig would be out of the question, did this before without auto paint and had your results. But thanks I am still trying to fix my surfers, they are not anywhere as nice as this, but they look better than they did after the storm.

it is called krylon rust tough enamel auto part silver spray paint. The second coat gives it that shiny chrome effect. Thanks a lot, I really wanted that to be the effect, so thanks again.

really means a lot, thanks. I love the shine it gives after seeing santanaz's version of silver surfer, want to give him credit for the idea (forgot to mention it in the thread, little scatter-brained at the moment), he did such a great job. But thanks again and may try a black panther now after seeing yours.

hows the joint rub on that paint?
avatar
Cosmic Fantasy Customs -
Sunday, August 14, 2011
I sanded the joints first, painted and sanded a few more times and only one spot that rubbed due to a flaw that is a chunk deep inside the fig, I could never reach without cracking the fig. and I had already sculpted the waist, so that was a no go. But other than that very strong, it just needs to dry properly and depends on the plastic (normal dry time is around 4 hours to handle properly and recommend one day per coat and if you can get something that spins to get both sides at the same time). the silver surfer and iceman I used had different plastics and could tell they took longer to dry. regular plastic like the hulk seemed to do much better and one thing that helped was to get a soft cloth and buff the fig to get excess spray dust off and it also gave it a better sheen. the exact brand is krylon rust tough enamel paint.

yes and I tried soaking the figs in an a slightly watered down acetone bath for over 12 hours and still nothing. I believe it would have taken a steel wire brush to remove it all and that would have completely damaged the fig. Some of the bad spots were able to be removed by the acetone and sanding (a lot of it) and some places would not do a thing. This spray paint is strong and rust proof. The water that damaged the figs (while it rained on them before drying) ruined the way the paint settled and was a major pain, so all the projects are a bit of what they are. I know I could have done better, its just if you make a mistake this stuff is not so forgiving. I may retry Silver Surfer someday, but will probably just post my silver surfer in the custom workstation for now.
