Trapped in Skull Mountain Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Playsets Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 For most kids back in the day; Mighty Max Trapped In Skull Mountain was the crown jewel of the collection; and I was no exception. Though I owned other large playsets then and now, such as Dragon Island and Terror Talons; Skull Mountain was always the cream of the crop for me; and it still is.
Very appropriately named; Skull Mountain dwarfed all other Mighty Max playsets during its time; dwarfing the Doom Zones and making the Horror Heads seem minuscule. Truly untouchable for a while as its size comparable companions such as Dragon Island hadn't been released yet; Skull Mountain was, pardon the expression, King of the Mountain.
It offers so many levels of playability; with little areas, platforms and so on pretty much everywhere. With balconies, a small island, a ribcage-themed elevator...[See More]
Slays the Doom Dragon Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 Like many other MM toys; the Doom Zone "Mighty Max Slays the Doom Dragon" holds much nostalgia for me.
I recall I wasn't feeling very good at the time; sick with one thing or another, and I was going to spend the weekend with my grandparents. Normally I would have stayed home if I was feeling so poorly, but my parents and sister were going out of town for the weekend or something; and due to my illness I was unable or unwilling to go; I can't recall.
To make me feel better, my mom took me shopping before taking me to my grandparents; and I remember finding this Doom Zone on the rack at K-Mart. For a seven year old kid not feeling too well and stranded for a weekend at my grandparents' place (which I usually enjoyed very much); the Doom Dragon sure made it all much more bearable.

Escapes from Skull Dungeon Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 In my neck of the woods, "Mighty Max Escapes from Skull Dungeon" is truly the Doom Zone that started it all.
It seemed like one day Mighty Max was virtually unheard of; and then, overnight it seemed, all of my friends were yammering on about Skull Dungeon! While my top favorite Doom Zones of series 1 are the Palace of Poison and the Doom Dragon; the popularity of Skull Dungeon cannot be denied. It's simply one of those toys that, even if they didn't really collect things like that, every kid in the era seemed to have.
Personally, I never found Skull Dungeon in stores. Well, that isn't true, I do recall seeing it eventually but gave it only scant attention as I'd already acquired one via trading with a friend. It was a hard playset to come by, at least in my region.
Firstly, the exterior....[See More]
Blows Up Dino Lab Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 In the 1990s; dinosaurs were everywhere. No matter if it was Jurassic Park, We're Back!, the Dinosaurs TV show or something else entirely; dinosaurs dominated the 90s; and the world of Mighty Max was not exempt.
Okay, I admit it: as a kid, "Mighty Max Blows Up Dino Lab" wasn't one of my favorite Doom Zones. Sounds a little wonky, right? After all, it had so many elements a kid should love: dinosaurs, a mad lab, a volcano hiding a laser gun! What's not to love!?
For me, it was the dinosaurs. Mighty Max spoiled me with so many monsters, aliens and feaks; so when Dino Lab came along; I was a little disappointed all around. I simply don't consider extinct, prehistoric beasts, no matter how frightening some may have been, to be monsters. It almost felt a little too mundane for me. At the...[See More]
Outwits Cyclops Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 Man, if this sure isn't a fun Doom Zone! Such a joy to play with in my youth; "Mighty Max Outwits Cyclops" isn't just among the best Doom Zones of series 2, but one of the best altogether.
The exterior is, of course, a Cyclops. With its singular horn and all, it conjures thoughts of a Ray Harryhausen creation; which is far from a bad thing. With its lumpy, ugly face of purple and green skin, bloodshot eye, nasty yellow teeth and worm-like tentacles sticking from its mouth; Cyclops certainly makes for a memorable if splendidly horrid toy.
The interior is an execution/torture chamber with plenty of themed goodies spread throughout. A guillotine, torture table and noose are just a few cool items lurking around as set decoration. There's also plenty of skeletons and skulls; par for the...[See More]
Squishes Fly Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 When it comes to the elusive series three of the Mighty Max Doom Zones; the only one I had as a kid was "Mighty Max Grips the Hand", so I wonder what I would have thought of "Mighty Max Squishes Fly" if I had this playset as a kid.
Typically, I found other similarly themed sets disappointing. Arachnoid and Scorpion were both generally weak to my childhood mind; and quite frankly both felt wanting, especially Scorpion which, while colorful and very cool on the exterior, felt borderline empty, almost incomplete; on the interior.
Fortunately, Fly succeeds on both exterior and interior; in my humble opinion. Let's hash over the exterior first.
The exterior is, you guessed it, a big ol' fly. With purple legs, a green and black body and red eyes; it certainly doesn't lack in color. The large,...[See More]
Lashes Lizard Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 As a kid; the only Doom Zone from the elusive and hard to find series three that I actually owned was Grips the Hand; so "Mighty Max Lashes Lizard" was a Doom Zone that lacked the nostalgia grip for me.
At first, I didn't really have much interest in this playset; as it simply didn't inspire me. While I absolutely love the exterior, I found the interior, while unique of the series, to be overall disappointing and the monsters to be sort of lackluster.
However, after scoping out several images online and watching a few review videos; Lashes Lizard slowly grew on me (like a parasite, you might say) and a Doom Zone I initially had zero interest in became my fifth purchase in my Mighty Max revival.
As for the exterior, you have an orange lizard with green eyes and a purple tongue. There's a...[See More]
Trapped by Arachnoid Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 4.50 stars by Greedo1138 While I certainly enjoyed and played with this set as a child; "Mighty Max Trapped by Arachnoid" was never among my favorites. That's kind of unusual, at least for me, as I love spiders. Perhaps it was because this particular Doom Zone is rather plain; compared to most of the others? Let's proceed with the review!
A fun Doom Zone on the exterior, it forms, naturally, a giant spider. The colors of black, purple and green look good together and conjure feelings of Halloween. One of the mini-figures, a giant spider named Creep, lends its mandibles and legs to the exterior; giving it a rather grotesque appearance; as if the spider is dragging along its bloated, bulbous body on legs too small. It also appears to be covered in small egg sacks (one of which is a component of the interior),...[See More]
Conquers the Palace of Poison Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 Looking back on my childhood; a few Mighty Max toys jump out at me with a great deal of not only nostalgia, but also sentimentality. "Mighty Max Conquers the Palace of Poison" is one such toy.
I recall coming home from school one day; and my mom was outside our house, decorating for either fall/autumn or perhaps Halloween. I can't recall precisely, but it was one or the other. She told me she bought me a surprise in town; and I could have it once I finished my homework; if I had any. Usually I didn't, but that day I did. How I rushed inside to get it done! Didn't even go to my room, just straight to the kitchen table and finished up that homework in record time! Work done and surprise in hand, I fell in love with Palace of Poison before I ever even tore it free of the package.
It simply...[See More]
Sinks Nautilus Mighty Max (Blue Bird) - Doom Zones Rated 5.00 stars by Greedo1138 As a kid, I had lots of Mighty Max toys. I had all of the big playsets excluding the Skull Master Mega Head; such as Skull Mountain, Dragon Island, Magus and Terror Talons. I had twelve of the eighteen Doom Zones. I had nine of the smaller Horror Heads and three of the more action figure-like Battle Warriors. Far from a complete collection; but a nice one nonetheless.
But one item I never owned as a kid (nor ever even seen in person until I bought one a couple of weeks or so ago) was the Doom Zone named "Mighty Max Sinks Nautilus". So as an adult; it was one of the first I simply had to get; especially after watching online a couple videos reviewing it.
First off, the exterior. This playset is, of course, a nautilus. Its purple shell with orange dots on the top and red/black cephalopod...[See More]
