Last year, when LootCrate revealed their TMNT series, many, including me, we mainly drawn in because each crate would include a figure by NECA. They weren’t anything real special, with most of them being redecos and repaints, but this year’s wave was more promising because it had pretty much newly sculpted figures, and they weren’t variants of existing ones, either. I think the main thing I love about NECA’s TMNT line (aside from the great sculpts and accessories) is just how deep they went it. Rather than just doing the four turtles, a few allies and villains, and being done with it, they showed just how much they love the license by doing pretty much everyone they can. Just look at the cartoon line; we got the Triceratons before Splinter. This applies to the movie line as well, because not only did we get the first ever figure of Danny Pennington (who I will review soon), but also Oroku Saki, the man before he became the Shredder, and Hamato Yoshi, Splinter’s owner (unless you count the old Mutations figures by Playmates). Since NECA’s all about horror/action/sci-fi movies and Ninja Turtles, it’s always an oddity when they do something out of those areas, but it’s also a good thing as well. Seriously, how many of us were expecting them to do ALF? But earlier on in the year, NECA revealed that they teamed up with Disney to do a whole line of Gargoyles figures, and a lot of people were excited, and some like me had an excuse to check out the series. Let’s face it. While Playmates has given TMNT a lot of love over the years, I feel like NECA is giving the proper treatment it deserves nowadays. With various different lines going on right now, plenty of characters, and some upcoming crossover figures with Universal Monsters, we’re pretty much getting spoiled. One thing to note about them is that they’re doing characters that have never been made into figures before, such as Granitor from the original cartoon and Danny Pennington from the first movie (who I will review soon), but what’s really special is that unlike Playmates, they’ve done all four of the Punk Frogs. 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of a couple films, including the original Evil Dead movie. Sam Raimi’s cult classic still holds up well after all these years thanks to its great story and special effects, and it did well enough initially to warrant sequels, video games, comic books, a remake, and a TV series. NECA has dabbled in the franchise before, doing figures coming from both the sequels, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, and the Starz Ash vs. Evil Dead series, and an Ash coming from the original movie is due out next year to celebrate the anniversary of the one that started the gory mayhem. Friday the 13th is one of the most well-known slasher/horror franchises, and I assume it will be one you first watch when getting into the genre. I haven’t seen anything beyond the fifth one yet, but for now, the third and fourth movies are my favorites. And we should all know Mezco by now thanks to their One:12 Collective line. They’ve done Friday the 13th before years ago as part of their “Cinema of Fear” line, but they’ve since done him again in their One:12 line, based off his appearance from Part 3, the most recognizable film in the franchise. Gremlins was already a pretty dark movie to begin with, but the original concept was a lot darker. Not only were the titular creatures more murderous than mischievous, but cute little Gizmo was going to turn into one as well. However, Spielberg felt that the audience would love Gizmo too much to see that happen to him, so they made his gremlin form a separate character, Stripe. I did say I would be doing more Gremlins reviews, didn’t I? So time to keep things going with a review of the evil gremlin leader. NECA once again went the “original poster art” route when it comes to packaging for this figure, and the poster used here is much like the one used with the ultimate Gremlin… except Stripe has busted through it with “WE’RE HERE!” written on it with crayon. The Mogwai… small, cute, and fluffy. But caring for one comes with three rules: don’t expose it to sunlight, don’t get it wet, and don’t feed it after midnight. Sunlight can kill it, getting it wet produces more, and feeding it after midnight results in it becoming one of these devils. For years, the classic horror-comedy Gremlins has been a staple of NECA, with many figures produced. Their ultimates from recent years aren’t hard to find, and they’re available at plenty of retailers. Though if you’re going to start a collection, you’ll either start with Gizmo or a Gremlin. As Halloween approaches, a lot of people are going to get in the mood with some horror films. Though if you can only see one, then I suggest watching Trick ‘r Treat. It’s a nice collection of stories all set on the same day that connect to each other in some way. It was not only my first horror film, but one of my favorites. NECA put out an ultimate of Sam, the pumpkin-headed spirit of Halloween that serves as the film’s mascot, like a year or two ago, and you may be able to find him easily enough online or through your local comic store or whatever. The packaging is what we expect out of NECA, but it’s worth noting that the poster art on the front has a shiny effect to it. Move over, Krang, we got the biggest (non-quarter-scale) figure in NECA’s ’87 TMNT line, and his name is Chrome Dome. And the company seems pretty boastful about that. The packaging is pretty much like what we’ve been seeing with these single-packed TMNT figures so far, what with the artwork and all. It definitely looks nice, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the art on the back is a hint to a future figure (hint: the fifth turtle). It’s collector-friendly like always, but I hope you don’t mind cutting out plastic ties like usual. Chrome Dome appeared twice in the series, and his height was different in both. “Planet of the Turtleoids” depicted him as gigantic, but “Night of the Rogues” made him smaller, standing only just a few feet taller than everyone else.
