Shazam!DC Universe Classics (Mattel) - Wave 6

Collector1Advertised only under the name Shazam! due to the legal agreement with Marvel Comics, Captain Marvel is a fine figure. This is a good example of a major overhaul for the mold. While the upperarms and thighs remain the same, the forarms, upperbody, and feet are completly new. The head seems to be an attempt to replicate Alex Ross' design for Captain Marvel on a budget. The cape is really well done here. The cape is gold trimmed with four gold trimmed ribbons going down vertically on its left side painted in a shiny bronze. The cord that holds the cape to his body is the same shade of gold as the trim and gauntlets. It can't be moved as it's glue on.
The lightning bolt on his chest is really well painted but faded on his lower abdomin. The belt has a few small paintless spots but it can be...[

Collector1I had been putting off this wave because when it first reached my backwater little corner of the world, they all had perhaps the sloppiest and most horrible paint applications I had ever seen in my life. After going out of stock and then being replenished, the ones on the shelves are much cleaner and look better so I decided to start grabbing them.
The Superman I picked up is the normal suit chase figure to the lines Black Suit Superman which keeps it in line with the previous Eradicator toy. Crossing my fingers for a Steel and Superboy figures! Anyway, his body is the basic male mold for the line with the necessary alterations made for his belt, boot tops and a unique head sculpt with the long hair seen on Superman after his resurrection and the better part of the 90's. Why it's...[

Collector1After my Wal Mart finally restocked on DC figures, I decided to start picking up this wave mostly because I had never owned toys of some of these characters. Hawkman is an impressive offering to say the very least. All the same articulation as most Male Bodies for this line, Hawkman's distinguishing feature is of course his wings which are attached to his back by a hinge and the wings themselves extend by a swivel. The feather detail on his wings is really impressive and the paint applications are done well on the whole body with no sloping or thin spots that I can see.
The hawk mask can not be removed, but I'm fine with that. His weapon assortment is a small sheild that can clip onto either hand, but is best for the right because the left hand is opened to hold his mace and dagger. The...[

Dr. ImpossibleDC Universe Classics (Mattel) - Wave 6

Henchmen4HireOne of the formulas used for naming a villain is to place the title of "Dr" before some kind of intangible, creepy, or just plain awesome-sounding thing. Dr Polaris, Dr Drakken, Dr Unrelentor, Dr Executor, Dr Evil Purple Unicorn. Yeah. Dr Impossible sounds alright. No one knows if he really is a doctor (not that it ever really matters). No one really knows who he is AT ALL. Current theories are; He used to be a common thug who found some Apokaliptic tech; Could be related to Mister Miracle (he has a serious grudge against the miracle-man); Could be a man-eating purple Unicorn in disguise.
Dr I stands almost 6.5 inches, he looks very tall, a bald head and high collar make him look bigger than he really is, a great attribute for a villain. The slimmer Black Manta base is smartly used and...[

Henchmen4HireThe JLU cartoons are the versions of characters that I like the most it seems. I think it's because there's aren't like 10 side-stories to each character like in comics, each story portraying them with a different attitude and different ideals. JLU Aquaman is a badass. He's got the sweet flowing mane, he's bare-chested, has a hook for a hand, and blows shoot up with a trident when he's pissed-off. And he has a hot red-headed wife. Aquaman is awesome.
I don't usually like the old costumes because they look stupid, basically. So a lot of the figures being made for DCUC are hit-and-miss for me. This Aquaman costume isn't my favorite, but I like it. I like all the colors and scale-armor is always cool. Aquaman stands about 6.2 inches, he has short water-swept hair, which makes sense over the...[

Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)DC Universe Classics (Mattel) - Wave 3

Collector1One of the greatest of Earth's hero's and champion of the Silver Age, Hal Jordan has finally got a DC Classics toy treatment. Found him at a Target in Texas and snatched him right up, being the only one left on the pegs.
Hal has the standard DC Superheroes/DCU Classics male body with a brand new head sculpt. The body appears to be molded out of green plastic with black paint. The hands are made of white plastic with the forearms painted white on black plastic. The boots are painted green and the feat are made of emerald plastic.
The ring his amazingly well done. Instead of just a lump of plastic on his fist, it is carefully sculpted to look like the ring from the comics which just blew me away. I'm giving props to Mattel for that one!
The paint on the body is rather smooth, though,...[

GeekSummitAh the BAF.... Mattel... Mattel, Mattel, Mattel..... You give someone a reason to go out and spend up to what $80 on pulling a series of these together and you give us the opposite of consumer satisfaction. Mattel... Mattel, Mattel, Mattel..... I get home with my 2 foot stack of spastic plastic and bust open the cards and pull all my new friends out and pull together my new Jumbo figure Despero. Mattel... Mattel, Mattel, Mattel..... Two left legs below the knee. Mattel... Mattel, Mattel, Mattel..... I'm gonna learn a lesson from this adventure... I always try to make sure I am taking home the cream of the crop when I'm selecting my crew to fill my shelf but in these funny times of get'em or forget it demand over supply... I just bite. So in the scarcity of Batman beyond this first...[

GeekSummitI have not seen so much of an issue with our silver Brother here. The lines are nice and straight, the tone is nice. The head is not just a reworked Steel head. Lots of things I had expected to see were not there. I dig this figure VERY much and hope they continue to run through my SUPER POWERS collection and fill my office shelves with Plastic Bad Boys like these....[

Captain Atom (Silver)DC Universe Classics (Mattel) - Wave 4

GeekSummitThis one really pushed me over. I had waited and waited for this to hit the shelves.. so I struck the Targets seeking this series out. Captain Atom was amongst the hardest to tackle it seemed. I finally pick on up and something just wasn't right. Of course we've all seen these figures slung into their plastic trays in ways that push limbs this way ans that. But what I saw today for a first rushed run of what should be the best figure series anyone has seen since 1984 made me want to rip my face off. I think Mattel needs to worry less about deadlines and junk and more about pushing their products out as if they were products. Knee joints incompletely manufactured!!!! Elbows incompletely joined!!!! Ankles undone in the package!!! Two right arms!!!! Arms completely on the wrong socket!!!!...[

GeekSummitI found this figure to be unique for sure. this is the first I've seen of the DCU DCSH figures to have a completely glossed paint job. I was worried about this since we all know gloss paint has a tendency to feel as wet as it looks. HOO-RA in this column. I have noticed on the few versions I have seen that the flagship detail, the red bat tends to come off a little flaky... is not cool. this will be the rarer of wave 4 as it has only slipped through in some spots that received revision 1 instead of wave 4/1, or at least that's how it was told to me. Any how there is not much to say about this figure. It has all the moxie you can ask for from a character that hasn't been sculpted in the near real realm as of yet. I say give it a 10 if I could....[
