Fall is approaching, and the kids are already heading back to school, but it means nothing for us who are already out of school. To commemorate this time of year, NECA did a "back to school" Gremlin a few years back, and you can get ahold of it easily if you know where to look. This version of the Gremlin is based off, of all things, an old newsprint ad from when the movie was still new. Said ad is recreated for the figure, but in color, and it looks very nice. The rest of the packaging has a school theme, and all the graphics are pretty good, with a few references to the film. As usual, there's a few plastic ties to snip out to remove the figure, but that aside, it's easy to get all the stuff out. After the disappointment that was the Brain Gremlin, I wasn't really sure if I would pick up another New Batch figure, or in this case, two of them. Eh, it's a set I've been wanting for a while, and spoiler alert: these two are much, much, better. I really like the packaging for this set, as it's supposed to resemble a big crate, and it sort of fits with the theme. It's easy to take everything out and put back in afterwards, though there's a couple plastic ties and bits of tape to remove for that to happen. Most of the Gremlins looked the same in the first movie, but The New Batch gave them more varied appearances, and this set has two of the generic ones. "We're advising our clients to put everything they've got into canned food and shotguns." May as well put that money into action figures as well, cause this guy has one. I was excited to hear that NECA had confirmed my hopes that the Brain Gremlin would get a new figure, especially because the one they did in their early days is pretty rare now. He's been hitting retailers for a while now, having recently begun to trickle into Target, my usual place for NECA. The packaging isn't anything too special, just having a photo of the original puppet on the front and photos of the figure on the back. It's not much, but it works. I could've sworn I reviewed this one already… When NECA made its return to Gremlins 2 last year, their first new figure was one they've had in the vault for a while. After who knows how many years since she was first shown off, Greta finally saw a release. She doesn't seem to be easy to find, so keep an eye out, I think she recently got a re-release. The packaging isn't anything too special, with just an image of the character on the front. Unusually for these "ultimate" boxes, this one has the hanger as a separate piece of plastic in the middle of the top flap, rather than cut onto the back of the box. Gremlins was already a pretty dark movie to begin with, but the original concept was a lot darker. Not only were the titular creatures more murderous than mischievous, but cute little Gizmo was going to turn into one as well. However, Spielberg felt that the audience would love Gizmo too much to see that happen to him, so they made his gremlin form a separate character, Stripe. I did say I would be doing more Gremlins reviews, didn’t I? So time to keep things going with a review of the evil gremlin leader. The Mogwai… small, cute, and fluffy. But caring for one comes with three rules: don’t expose it to sunlight, don’t get it wet, and don’t feed it after midnight.
