Mighty Max (Blue Bird)As a kid; the only Doom Zone from the elusive and hard to find series three that I actually owned was Grips the Hand; so "Mighty Max Lashes Lizard" was a Doom Zone that lacked the nostalgia grip for me. At first, I didn't really have much interest in this playset; as it simply didn't inspire me. While I absolutely love the exterior, I found the interior, while unique of the series, to be overall disappointing and the monsters to be sort of lackluster. However, after scoping out several images online and watching a few review videos; Lashes Lizard slowly grew on me (like a parasite, you might say) and a Doom Zone I initially had zero interest in became my fifth purchase in my Mighty Max revival. As for the exterior, you have an orange lizard with green eyes and a purple tongue. There's a knob on the lizard's knee which you can turn to make the tongue flicker in and out. You can also raise the top part of the lizard's head; exposing more of the eyes, tongue and general grossness. One of the lizard's arms looks swollen, purple and infected; its digits actually being a part of one of the monsters inside. All in all the exterior is cool and eye-catching; it pops in any collection. A bonus is the fun feature of the moving tongue; not many Doom Zones had a play feature on the exterior. As for the interior; it is a literal (with plenty creative license) inside of a lizard. Imagine a dissected specimen in biology class. The combined interior colors of purple, orange and white blend well together and definitely attracts the attention of the eye. Plenty of bones, organs, pits and parasites make up the sculpt with a fun ribcage on the back wall and a bit of spine on the floor which can be raised and serve as another cage to trap Max. As for the included mini-figures; you're treated to three in this set: Mighty Max, the Parasite Prince (what a name!) and the Ulcer Monster. As usual, let's jump to the good stuff and discuss the villains. The Parasite Prince (a regal if fittingly disgusting title) is the main antagonist of this Doom Zone; and what a repulsive creature he is. A bloated, blobby, tentacled, nightmarish monstrosity with a human-like face; imagine something like a Buddha designed by H.P. Lovecraft. The Parasite Prince is actually among my favorite figurines in the entire Mighty Max series now; which says something considering there was a time when I didn't really want this playset at all. In the mini-comic on the back of the blister card, the Parasite Prince has a sword to harass the Mighty One with; but his mini-figure lacks the sword. He's all blob and tentacle-like appendages. He does however have a segmented, slug-like tail which can be rotated; so that's cool. Few and far between are the figurines in this line with any articulation at all; at least since some of the series one Doom Zones. Our other villain in this set is one of the Parasite Prince's minions; the Ulcer Monster. He's basically a vaguely hand-shaped creature with a long tail (sort of like a face-hugger from Alien) with a lamprey-like mouth on its underside. This creature's five arm-like appendages can be seen on the Doom Zone's exterior; making up part of the lizard's infected-looking arm. All in all; I really enjoy this Doom Zone; much more than I thought I would. I'm glad I didn't put off buying it or passing on it altogether.  by Greedo1138 |
