Mighty Max (Blue Bird)Man, if this sure isn't a fun Doom Zone! Such a joy to play with in my youth; "Mighty Max Outwits Cyclops" isn't just among the best Doom Zones of series 2, but one of the best altogether.
The exterior is, of course, a Cyclops. With its singular horn and all, it conjures thoughts of a Ray Harryhausen creation; which is far from a bad thing. With its lumpy, ugly face of purple and green skin, bloodshot eye, nasty yellow teeth and worm-like tentacles sticking from its mouth; Cyclops certainly makes for a memorable if splendidly horrid toy.
The interior is an execution/torture chamber with plenty of themed goodies spread throughout. A guillotine, torture table and noose are just a few cool items lurking around as set decoration. There's also plenty of skeletons and skulls; par for the course. The inside of the mouth appears to be some kind of den; full of tiny Eye of Cyclops spawn.
But the coolest features of the interior are the iron maiden with opening door and a large crematorium/fireplace with a raising face-like grate; large enough to trap Max inside of.
As for mini-figures and accessories; you receive four with this set: Mighty Max, Vile Torturer, Eye of Cyclops and a Cage.
The Vile Torturer is a pretty cool mini-figure with his spiked helmet and cat o' nine tails weapon; looking like a cross between a Roman Gladiator and a Barbarian Warrior; with a healthy dose of Ogre and/or Orc thrown in.
The Eye of Cyclops is a large monster; a heap of yellow, bloodshot eyeball and plenty of tentacles. The underside of the monster is hollow; it can fit over the cage or swallow your mini-figures alive.
And lastly is the cage itself; large enough to hold smaller figurines as they await their certain doom.
I had a lot of fun with this Doom Zone as a kid; and it's no less fun to have it again as an adult. Simply one of the best.
