Escapes from Skull Dungeon (Mighty Max) Review
Escapes from Skull Dungeon
Mighty Max (Blue Bird)In my neck of the woods, "Mighty Max Escapes from Skull Dungeon" is truly the Doom Zone that started it all.
It seemed like one day Mighty Max was virtually unheard of; and then, overnight it seemed, all of my friends were yammering on about Skull Dungeon! While my top favorite Doom Zones of series 1 are the Palace of Poison and the Doom Dragon; the popularity of Skull Dungeon cannot be denied. It's simply one of those toys that, even if they didn't really collect things like that, every kid in the era seemed to have.
Personally, I never found Skull Dungeon in stores. Well, that isn't true, I do recall seeing it eventually but gave it only scant attention as I'd already acquired one via trading with a friend. It was a hard playset to come by, at least in my region.
Firstly, the exterior. An eye-catching skull with a glaring red and yellow eye, large white teeth and a differently shaped eye socket of red bars. It's a very iconic Doom Zone; even if it didn't have the big red and gold MM on the front; most would know right off the bat where this toy comes from.
As for the interior; I'm surprised this set was called Skull Dungeon. Only a tiny portion of this playset is actually a dungeon; but I suppose "Mighty Max Escapes from Skull Labratory" just doesn't have the same ring to it. Nevertheless, the majority of this playset is indeed a laboratory.
There are some cool features throughout; such as a bookcase that is secretly a door to the dungeon; exterior teeth which can be lowered to provide steps in and out of the playset, a raising table, a moveable lever and so on. All kinds of cool little features to explore.
Mini-figures and removable parts include Mighty Max, Dr. Gore, Smasher and two electrodes.
Dr. Gore is a mad scientist through and through; dressed like he hasn't entered an operating theater since the 1940s. Physically, he isn't much to look at. He's like Dr. Frankenstein and Igor rolled into one with a hunchback and an unevenly proportioned face the likes of Jason Voorhees and the Toxic Avenger could relate to. I can actually remember using Dr. Gore as a primary antagonist in several of my childhood Mighty Max adventures; similar to Dr. Tongue from Zombies Ate My Neighbors; my very favorite SNES game back in those days.
Dr. Gore's monstrous creation Smasher is of course the Frankenstein Monster without using such a heavily trademarked and copyrighted name. He's really the star of this Doom Zone and looks just as great lying on the operating table (especially when the table is slightly raised) as he does standing around somewhere.
The two electrodes (how many of us lost those as a kid?) have pegs on the bottom and can be positioned in one of two places; either on the floor flanking Dr. Gore or above Smasher's operating table. In this day and age, the electrodes can be the most difficult pieces to find in this Doom Zone if it's loose and open; so if you don't have them and you want the real McCoy; I'd move fast as I've heard rumors of some folks looking to 3D print them.
While I admit Skull Dungeon is in third position of my favorite Doom Zones of series one; I freely admit how iconic and popular it is; simply looking at that skull exterior fills one with nostalgia; and I am happily no exception to that.
