Slays the Doom Dragon Mighty Max (Blue Bird)Like many other MM toys; the Doom Zone "Mighty Max Slays the Doom Dragon" holds much nostalgia for me. I recall I wasn't feeling very good at the time; sick with one thing or another, and I was going to spend the weekend with my grandparents. Normally I would have stayed home if I was feeling so poorly, but my parents and sister were going out of town for the weekend or something; and due to my illness I was unable or unwilling to go; I can't recall. To make me feel better, my mom took me shopping before taking me to my grandparents; and I remember finding this Doom Zone on the rack at K-Mart. For a seven year old kid not feeling too well and stranded for a weekend at my grandparents' place (which I usually enjoyed very much); the Doom Dragon sure made it all much more bearable. The exterior is the head of a dragon; but it doesn't really look a lot like one, in my opinion. To me, it's reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen's Kraken at best and a cartoonish turtle-monster at Worst. I can readily forgive the kind of disappointing exterior; because the interior is awesome. The interior is the lair/cave of the Doom Dragon itself and his good chum Ravendark. Full of rocks, stalagmites and stickers of fire and a boiling acid pit; it's a lot of fun. There's a hooked rope and rickety swing bridge Max can use to reach the upper levels of the lair where Ravendark's dwelling is; complete with a tome on a pedestal and a comfy chair. The Doom Dragon has his own personal cave down on the ground level. The entire interior is a lot of fun; the jagged rocks and spires of stone looking both treacherous and labyrinthine from certain angles. Our mini-figures include Mighty Max, Ravendark and the Doom Dragon. Ravendark is such a cool villain; his design leaves much to the imagination which is so much of his charm. Faceless and with a plain hooded robe; Ravendark can fill a variety of roles in your adventures. Is he some manner of dark priest or cultist? A black magic-slingling sorcerer or warlock? A spectral wraith or reaper? He's whatever your imagination desires; even just a medieval-looking maniac with a knife for one hand if you like. Now, Skull Master loves his Dragons. No matter if he's hanging around his mansion Skull Mountain, his vacation home Dragon Island or piloting his two-headed Battle Warrior; Skull Master always keeps a dragon around. However the Doom Dragon, the very first Dragon toy in the toyline; isn't so fortunate as all of that. He's stuck inside a Doom Zone; so he doesn't have the size advantage of the dragons of Skull Mountain and Dragon Island; looking like a runt by comparison. Maybe he's a baby? Regardless, he's still big enough to be a serious threat for Max; and of course the Doom Dragon looks good hanging out in other playsets; like the aforementioned Skull Mountain and Dragon Island for examples. I'd partially forgotten how much fun this Doom Zone is until I held it in hand again; so many years later. I still get sick on occasion, I still visit my grandparents' house; and now I have a new Doom Dragon, too. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
