Darth Vader (Star Wars) Review
Darth Vader
Star Wars (Kenner)This first figure of the Dark Lord of the Sith was used throughout Kenner's Star Wars line and it's nostalgia factor might influence a lot of collector's opinions and some might think a modern fan (such as myself who grew up in the late 90s) would not be a fan of this model but in fact I think it's a perfect start to a promising future and decent first attempt that was perfect for the era he was released in. I believe the choice of giving him a trench coat instead of a cloak or cape was a stylistic choice based on the robe Vader wears over his chest guard instead of under as he does in other films, so one could treat this as his robe and then add a cloak over, but it still looks great as it is. I've made my own version out of bluetac as a kid and own 2 as an adult and I think this Vader just has a lot of nice detail that a lot of companies might have chosen not to include had Lucas given the toy license to any other company. The Saber in the arm is a nice touch making the lightsaber hard to lose but the ultra thin end piece is often damaged or missing on used examples of the figure. Rating this figure is hard to do as you have to take into account the time it was released (1977 though really 1978 as the Early Birds set only gave you a pre order for 4 heroes not Vader), so 5 POA (points of articulation) is more than acceptable for this time period and considering the detail and decent sculpt it deserves a good score. Furthermore there was a bigger emphasis on playing than there is today and when you see modern figures with 5 POA it doesn't meet expectations of a modern world (speaking from experience as even figures in the late 90s and early 2000's it felt like some figures were lacking and others weren't simply due to articulation or some sculpts being better than others). Darth Vader remained a staple in Kenner's run for the 3 original films and deservedly so. It's hard to give it a rating but I feel 4.5 is honest for the time it was released as it's one outstanding flaw is that the saber would break easily from usage.
