Tokka & Rahzar (Neca Store) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)Last year was definitely a great one for NECA with all the new figures and licenses, but the best license to come out of them was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They covered the original cartoon that introduced many to the franchise, the 1990 movie, and even the fan-favorite video game Turtles in Time. We got many great figures, and the best ones of them are Tokka and Rahzar. The two were introduced in Secret of the Ooze, the sequel to the original movie, as New Line's answer to Bebop and Rocksteady. The two became popular pretty quickly and have appeared in other adaptions of TMNT since. Along with Super Shredder, these two were the first SOTO figures to come out of NECA. T&R's release was special, and that means they were released as pre-orders on NECA's online store last summer, and they were only up for a week. They began shipping out back in December, and I can assume everyone got their's. The two cost $70 when they were up, and if you missed out on the initial order, eBay is your only chance now. Packaging: Like all TMNT two-packs, Tokka and Rahzar come in a window box, and a big one at that. The colors of the box are rather similar to the poster, and there's photos of the figures all around. The whole thing is quite sturdy and collector-friendly, and the backdrop inside the box was a nice touch. There is a LOT of plastic ties, however, so have some scissors on hand. Sculpt: Starting off with Tokka, he really looks like he came right out of the screen. Looking at reference images, they managed to get all the details on him, from the jagged teeth to the spikes on his shell, it's all here. The spikes are a softer plastic, but they can still jab, so be careful when handling him. His skin is quite wrinkly, especially around the head and upper body, and those textures are replicated here quite will. Rahzar is just as detailed, and has a mix of solid plastic for the body and softer material for the black armor he wears. The armor on the torso is a separate piece from the rest of the body, and it's held on there by real metal chains. The fur around his head is supposed to be fluffy in appearance, and they mimicked that by making the fur on the figure's head a softer plastic. Then again, he's supposed to be furry all around, and while it's not 100% accurate on the figure, he still looks great. Both of them aren't too much bigger than the movie Turtles, though they were only around a head taller than them in the movie itself. Tokka is somewhere between 6 1/2 and 7" tall, and Rahzar is about 7 1/2". Paint: Tokka definitely has great paint, with all of the proper details being painted. The spots are very neatly painted on, and there is wash where appropriate. The eyes have a bloodshot appearance as well, and it makes him more ferocious. The paint is not without its' issues, however, as there is a bit of white rub-off on the right arm, and the soft plastic on the shell spikes means that paint peeling off can happen. I noticed no real issue with Rahzar's paint, and there's plenty of wash and other variety to make everything stand out. The wraps on the arms and loincloth have a mix of white and dark wash to make them look nice and used. My only suggestion for his paint is that the fur color should be a little bit lighter. Another nitpick is that NECA thought it would be a smart idea to paint the wrist joints, and moving them can result in the paint flaking off. Articulation: One really solid area of these figures is the articulation. There's plenty of useful joints and they all move with no issues. And both of them have very similar articulation with a few differences. Both of them have ball-joints at the head and neck, and the range of the motion on both is great. The shoulders, elbows, and wrists are all swivel/hinge joints, and they move very well. The elbows, of course, are the double-jointed type NECA loves using nowadays. There is a ball-jointed chest on both, though the one on Rahzar works much better and has a huge range of motion, and those chains and armor aren't really a hinderance. The ball-jointed hips are a welcome addition to NECA figures, thanks to how easy to move they are, and swivel thighs allow for natural-looking leg poses. The knees are swivel-hinge on both, with Tokka's being double-jointed while Rahzar has a single s/h on them. The rocker ankles work well and help the two stand sturdy. On to the most important feature of these two, which is the hinged jaws. They can open up wide and allow for some nice expressions. Tokka gets it better with posable eyebrows, and his beak moves as well. Nice! Accessories: There's plenty of accessories here, and they all fit the characters well. Both figures have two extra sets of hands each, which are a pair of fists, or at least the best fits the costumes can make, and a pair of gripping hands. They swap easily and can be used with the various accessories. For combat, there's a big pipe and a wooden beam, and both figures can hold them thanks to the extra hands. Rahzar's shield is here as well, and it clips onto his left arm easily. Also included with the two are a fire extinguisher, right from their battle with the Turtles, and a pile of "traditional pre-fight" donuts, and a cardboard box for them. There's also a separate donut, crushed to reveal the retromutagen inside. Finally, there's a mutagen canister, reused from Super Shredder. Playability: With great articulation, plenty of accessories, and interchangeable hands and face articulation for different display options, you'll have quite a bit of fun posing them in all sorts of ways. And if you have the NECA or Playmates movie Turtles, they'll go great with these two. Value: NECA's TMNT two-packs are usually $50, but this set is $70, which is a lot more. And with taxes and shipping, it can be around $85-90 total, which is pretty pricey. Given how it was a NECA Store exclusive, and a limited-time order at that, it's a bit justified, though I really think it should've been cheaper. Overall: If anyone can do the TMNT franchise right, it's NECA, and Tokka and Rahzar are amongst the best figures to come out of their line. They look great in pretty much every way, and all the articulation and accessories does them well. The price point on them is an issue, but nothing that really sets them back. With NECA doing more movie figures this year, I hope they do another round of these for those who missed out on them the first time. Aside from that, I'm personally hoping they do some TMNT III figures. I want some samurai Turtles! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
