Quint (Shark Battle) (Jaws (Neca)) Review
Quint (Shark Battle)
Jaws (Neca) (Neca)It’s been about 45 years since the ever-famous Jaws hit theaters, the classic thriller involving a group of men setting out to kill a man-eating shark, and it inspired quite a lot of other films with similar premises. Last year, NECA announced that they had acquired the license and revealed prototypes of Quint and Brody at Toy Fair. Unfortunately, Brody got canned due to licensing issues, but Quint was still happening, and he finally saw a release last month. A Bruce the shark has been announced too, but who knows when we’ll get him (I predict next year).

We have a nice window box for the packaging, with reused poster art combined with photographs of the figure. It’s easy to open up, too. Just remove the tape and plastic ties with some scissors and you’re good to go. They could’ve picked a better backdrop for the inside of the box, however. Here it’s just a body of water like on the poster, and I would’ve preferred a beach or the Orca.

When doing a likeness, NECA either gets it done perfectly, or gets at least one detail wrong and everyone complains. Here, they nailed it. Comparing it to shots of the film, the resemblance to Robert Shaw is great, and the hair is sculpted to allow the hat, which is a separate piece, to fit over it. Both the gloved and bare hands have realistic detail and texture, and the shoes look great as well. The paint is nice and clean, aside from a few fuzzy edges, and there’s a good amount of wash on the clothing to bring out some realism. The figure stands at about 8” tall, so don’t expect him to blend too well with your ultimates.

Why is he 8” tall? Because he’s a part of NECA’s Mego-inspired “retro” line, meaning he also has a tailored outfit. The outfit here is accurate, and the coat and shirt go nicely here. The shirt underneath doesn’t have any sleeves, so that the arm articulation won’t be as hindered. The coat itself doesn’t have much restriction on the articulation, and neither does the pants. The combination of an outfit that looks good and isn’t restrictive is great to have.

The articulation scheme on retros is different from the ultimates, and what Quint has is similar to the Ghostface I covered, but with a few differences. Quint has a ball-jointed head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and hips, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows, hinged knees, and rocker/hinge ankles. This new body was introduced around late 2019 I believe, and the new joints here are very useful (why couldn’t Ghostface have these joints). It can be hard to get him standing in certain poses, but there’s still a lot he can do.

Moving onto the accessories, I don’t think any retro figure had this many before. As I mentioned before, the hat is removable, and you can swap it out for a bandana. Both can be removed easily, but fit tightly enough on the head that they won’t fall off at random. There’s also a rifle, spear gun, bat, and machete, all of which are very well-painted and detailed. There’s two beer cans as well – crushed and full. Like most times NECA does an accessory based off a brand in real-life, they do something fictional instead of the real thing. The brand of beer? “Necagetsit”.

There’s also some extra hands as well for holding the various accessories. The default hands here are meant to hold the firearms, but there’s also a pair of bare hands that can also grip them. In addition, there’s a bare wide right, designed to hold the beer can, and a gloved tight left, designed to hold the bat and machete. The hands swap easily, and they allow for plenty of display options.

Overall, Quint is a great figure. The likeness is dead-on, the outfit looks great, the articulation works well, and there’s so many accessories here you think he was originally planned to be an ultimate. Despite the constant delays, he was worth the wait, and while Bruce has been confirmed and Hooper may be a possibility, I hope NECA can work something out so we can get Brody and complete the main crew.
