Perceptor (Transformers - Generation 1) Review
Perceptor
Transformers - Generation 1 (Hasbro)I own 3 microscopes, and 2 of them are Perceptors. This guy is seriously impressive.
Not bad at all for a g1 toy thanks to his Microchange ancestry (if you ever had Micronauts, you know how good even the basic figures could be), Big P sports swivel shoulders, hinged elbows, and swivel-hinge knees and hips. Combined with a little vertical play in the toes, he's actually quite poseable compared to many. Armed with a rifle and (neutered for the TF release) missile launcher, he cuts an imposing figure. The only real downside here is the immobile neck.
The altmode looks a tad wonky, but it's mostly the color and blocky central section. Compare it to children's/students' microscopes of the era, and it's fairly nice. The slightly wavy and uneven mirror below the tray doesn't look like it would reflect light properly, but it totally does, and the adjustable focus of the barrel does indeed function up to 5x. Which isn't much for a microscope, but a lot for a TF, and it still works better than the Titans Return version.
I've tested this with actual microscope slides, and apart from mine being slightly off-center, it works like a charm.
There's a third mode here, sort of a tank or AA gun. It's not exactly good, but it was kind of an afterthought in the first place, and can be safely ignored.
I may be giving this higher marks than it deserves, but dammit, I love this thing. Rifle-toting Battle Scientist is a very fun thing to be, or if you're married to the actual media, non-combatants are few and far between, and add some character to the shelf. It's not terribly expensive either thanks to the reissue (hell, that thing's even cheaper, and comes with microscope slides and no issues with flaking chrome), so if you love old robot toys of any sort, this one deserves a spot.
