Mondo Gecko (Shred, Mondo, Shred!) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Mondo Gecko (Shred, Mondo, Shred!)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)It sure has gotten easier to get NECA’s TMNT figures, huh? With the distribution on them having improved along with online pre-orders for certain releases, fans couldn’t be happier. Those of the most recent releases now, the ultimate toon Mondo Gecko and Muckman, got offered a while back on NECA’s online store NOT as pre-orders, but direct stock, and they’re shipping out now from them. I only ordered Mondo and just got him in, so let’s take a look.

Like with past TMNT toon ultimates such as Metalhead and Krang, Mondo uses new artwork based off of the old VHS tapes for the packaging. It looks great and pretty much shows how much NECA cares for the license. As with any ultimate box, this one is easy to open, but you’ll have to cut some tape and plastic ties to get everything out.

Mondo himself translated great to figure form, with all the proper details and proportions, and he stands around 5½ tall. While I can’t really say anything bad about the sculpt, the paint does have a few issues. There’s a bit of bleed and slop on mine, and fortunately it’s not too noticeable, but my main gripe is the painted hinges on the arms. The paint on them can chip off easily when you move the joints, and it’s most noticeable on the gloved right hand, where the joint is painted red but is green plastic underneath. It’s not a big issue, but it’s still pretty bothersome.

Mondo continues the trend of going all out with the articulation in the Turtles line, as he has a ball-jointed head and neck, hinged jaw, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs (both at the hip joints and shorts), ball-jointed chest, hips, and tail, double-hinged knees, and rocker/hinge ankles. Aside from a bit of tightness, all of the joints move well and allow for plenty of poses, and the hinged jaw adds some expression to him. The tail joint is tighter here than on figures like the Triceratons and Leatherhead, mainly due to it not being a “barbell” joint with balls on both ends, but rather one ball emerging from his rear.

Moving onto the accessories, Mondo has his skateboard, of course, with rolling wheels and a footpeg on the side to allow him to stay stable in certain poses. The pre-mutated gecko, blaster, bag, and explosive all come from his debut episode, and they look nice. Also included are a set of gripping hands, and a compliance cuff from the Dirk Savage episode, which can split in half to fit it onto his arm. The last accessory here is a whole another figure – Kerma the Turtleoid. He looks nice, standing about 3” tall with good sculpting and paint (aside from some slop on the belt), and he’s decently articulated as well, with a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge shoulders, and swivel wrists and legs. While this little guy never interacted with Mondo on the show, he’s still a nice inclusion and a good figure to compliment the upcoming Groundchuck and Dirtbag two-pack.

While we’ve already gotten some fun figures in the line, I don’t think anything will top Mondo right now. Almost everything about him is perfect, and it shows just what good of a job one company can do if they care about the license enough. And care they do as they gave it a way to make it easier to get ahold of. If the same method can be done with the upcoming Chrome Dome ultimate, then I will really be happy.
