Splinter Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)It was an interesting choice of Super7 in their TMNT Ultimates line to have one of the turtles themselves in each wave, but even if there’s only one in the first wave, you still got to have their sensei/father figure, Splinter. Do I even need to say anything about the packaging here? It’s pretty much just like everyone else in the line, and S7’s Ultimates in general. May as well just go right ahead and talk about the figure. The sculpt, much like the other figures, is based off of the original Playmates figure with some updated details. The tail is longer and pointier at the end, much like how it is on a real rat, and the head resembles the artwork on the original cardback more, with more pointed ears. I think some have said that his head looks off, but I think it’s alright. The detail on the fur is nice, and the paint on the figure is clean all around. Like the original figure, the robe Splinter is wearing is cloth, but the belt is different here. The radical rat stands about 5 ¾” tall, making him the shortest figure in the line so far (I think). The articulation isn’t too far off from the other figures in the line, with a ball-jointed head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and tail, mid-tail swivel, and swivel/hinge/rocker ankles. The rocker joint on the left ankle was stuck tight at first, but I managed to get it freed. While the arms and legs work well, the head and chest don’t have as big a range of motion as I wanted. The tail also helps to keep the figure stable in certain poses. Splinter has plenty of accessories cause how else is Super7 going to justify the $45 cost for these figures. There’s three extra sets of hands – relaxed, grasping, and closed – and they all swap easily. The stuff from the original figure is here as well, the bow, sword cane, and two shurikens. The bow and arrow is no longer a solid piece here; it’s a functional bow with three arrows that can actually be fired, and it’s a nice upgrade over the old accessory. In addition, we get a regular walking stick, mug, turtle, and an alternate soft plastic robe that resembles the original one more. Of course, the unpainted weapons rack is included as well, and while it’s not just like the original figure, it’s still nice-looking and a neat little bonus. There’s been a couple people who said that Splinter is their least favorite of the wave since they don’t consider him as much fun as the others. Sure, he’s not a turtle or robot or mutant fly, but he’s still a key character with some fun accessories, and the only drawback is the lack of tilt in the ball-joints. He may not be super unique, but you’ll still want to grab him anyways just for the shell of it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
