Foot Soldier (Trouble's Afoot) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Foot Soldier (Trouble's Afoot)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)NECA sure knows how to make the most out of a figure, huh? We’ve seen this Foot Soldier like what, eight times? Sure, they included it in two-packs, that SDCC eight-pack, and even damaged versions, but never by itself. Now that has changed with the ultimate release.
The packaging art is inspired by the old VHS tapes, but this is the coolest looking one they did. A small army of these diabolical droids scaling the rooftops is shown on the front, and it’s definitely beautiful. Everything inside is neatly packed inside plastic trays, and there’s only a few bits of plastic ties and tape you need to remove.

The sculpt of the Foot Soldier here is almost exactly like previous releases, with the only changes in it being the articulation, but more on that later. Standing around 6 ¼” tall, it looks just as good as it did before, but the bolder colors really spice up it’s appearance. The pads on the arms aren’t super neat, but it’s good enough. However, NECA still thought that painting the wrist joints was a smart idea, so expect the paint on them – all 12 – to chip off. On the bright side, we get two extra heads to go with the updated Foot; one is the regular head but with a yellow foot symbol, resembling their appearance from season 3 onwards, and the Alpha One head from season 4’s “The Foot Soldiers are Revolting”. The Alpha One head is definitely digging deep, and the details on it look great. However, you’ll want to warm up the plastic around the hole to fit it onto the ball more easily.

The articulation isn’t too much different from past ones, but with a few changes. The bot has a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps, waist, thighs, and boots, double-hinged elbows and knees, ball-jointed hips, rocker/hinge ankles, and hinged toes. The hips and ankles are the only changes from the respective swivel/hinge and ball joints on the first release, and the updates here allow for better posing and more stability. Everything moves well and there’s little tightness, though those shoulder hinges are pretty tight, and you can’t make them go out all the way. I’m especially cautious about them because I broke the right arm on the older figure no thanks to that tight shoulder, but I’m confident that I’ll have no issue as long as I take care.

The accessory count with this figure is huge. I did say there was 12 hands after all. There’s the fists it comes wearing, a pair of tight grips, wide grips, gun grips, relaxed/flailing, and flat hands. Most of them swap easily and allow for plenty of display options, not to mention the fact that they’re a softer plastic this time around. A good chunk of what we got here is recycled from past Foot releases – the large blasters (one of them repainted), small blaster, shurikens, mutagen canister, and one of the swords – and the communicator is recycled from the Tragg/Granitor set. Everything else is new, however. We now got a spear, fan, a pistol-like blaster, new sword, and a police hat than can work with the regular heads (but obviously not the Alpha One head).

I didn’t think that we could get a better Foot Soldier from NECA after the Turtles in Time one, but they proved me wrong. Aside from the tight shoulders and paint chipping off the wrist joints, they pretty much nailed it with this one. A lot of people will want to get more than one, but I’m content with just having a single figure.
