Max (Sam & Max) Review
Max
Sam & Max (Boss Fight Studio)Jeez, it took me how long to get the Boss Fight Max to go with my Sam? I got the big guy like back around April or May I believe, and it’s like almost the end of August now? Sheesh, you think a guy who said that you can’t have Sam without Max would take this long to complete the duo. I caved in a while back ordered him through BBTS, and it didn’t take too long for him to get here.

The packaging is the same as what Sam has, but the graphics are somewhat different. Still, it looks great and it’s easy to open, so not much to say here. Max himself stands about 4 ¼” tall from the big feet to his rabbit ears, and he looks nice. Like with Sam, you get three options for heads, an open mouth smile, a grinning head, and one with a blank mouthless stare (think Hello Kitty). The ears are separate pieces than are meant to be swapped onto each head, but swapping the heads themselves are somewhat difficult due to how tightly the open mouth head is on the ball, requiring some strength and care to pop it off. The rest of the body looks great, and the paint is nice and clean, and unlike Sam, nothing is glossy, effectively making him look a bit nicer than his pal.

Max’s articulation is pretty similar to Sam, with a ball-jointed head and hips, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and knees, and swivel wrists. Unlike Sam, none of the joints are stiff and everything moves well, but the hips are a bit restricted in movement. Sure, they kick forward and back well enough, but they don’t move out to the side as much. The lack of articulation in the ankles is a crime, though!

There’s plenty of accessories for Max here aside from the extra heads. We get three extra sets of hands – splayed fingers, closed, a pointing right, and a peace sign left – which are all nice additions, but they’re a tight fit, so grab ahold of the forearms when swapping. Also included is a pistol, which is more of a silencer than the huge revolver Sam has, a hammer, a rat with a swivel at the tail, and the duo’s telephone (“I’ll get it!”). Everything here is great, and that phone opens up plenty of display options.

I’m surprised I didn’t get Max sooner; he’s just as fun as Sam is, if not more so (thanks to the smoother joints). They shouldn’t be too hard to get ahold of, so grab them while you can. God knows how long we’ll see the second wave of figures, though...
