Metalhead (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7)) Review
Metalhead
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)Looks like Super7 finally appealed to me with their Turtles figures by doing an updated version of one of my personal favorites from the original line. No, it’s sadly not Slash… but it is Metalhead (and we got Casey on track for next wave)! The packaging is the same-old, same-old, yadda, yadda, yadda… so let’s just move on.

Metalhead isn’t one of the Ninja Turtles, per say, but he’s still a turtle, mechanical or not, and he stands just as tall as them at 6”. His appearance isn’t too much different from his 1989 counterpart, but his torso looks quite unlike the original in which he actually has a neck. Everything looks just as good as before, and the head even has the translucent eyes and brain just like the original figure, in addition to an extra head with painted eyes and brain. Speaking of paint, there’s a few more painted details here, but there’s some inaccuracies as well. The original figure had a little red lightning bolt on the left upper arm, but on the S7 one, it’s a rectangle instead. They also didn’t bother to paint the little green rectangles on the forearms like the original had as well. Still, these changes are so minor that you won’t notice unless you have both versions of him. In addition, the chest isn’t vac-metalized, but it is a nice shiny golden color.

Metalhead’s articulation is just like on the other Turtles we got so far, with a ball-jointed head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and knees, swivel biceps and thighs, and rocker/hinge ankles. None of the joints are too tight, but the legs are where I had problems. Their balance isn’t very good, especially with some looseness in the hip swivels, and it’s worse when he’s wearing the backpack. I also noticed that the waist and knees are more restricted in motion, but with the knees, it’s only for the swivels due to the cords on the legs, and turning the knees could stress the plastic, but they’re still soft enough to allow for some good bend. Overall, the articulation isn’t bad, but there’s still some areas where it could’ve been improved.

We got a good amount of accessories included here, both from the original figure and some new additions. We have seven different hands: gripping, open, closed, and an extra right with a whip coming out of the finger, something pulled right from the cartoon. The backpack with radar is here, and it connects to the back like always, though it kinda worsens his stability issues. The “robo-chucks” are also back, and we got two different ones – one that plugs into the forearm, and one that plugs into the backpack (admit it, you tried it out on the original figure too). The tip of them now turns as well, which is a big upgrade. The two grenades are new, and they aren’t recycled from Rocksteady either (I even checked to make sure), and finally, we got the unpainted weapons sprue. The original figure didn’t have one, but Super7 decided to include because why not (and also to justify paying $45 for a 1/10 scale figure).

Super7 is finally starting to get to my favorites in the original line and I’m happy. While the stability issues bum me out, the positives outweigh the negatives here, and Metalhead is definitely a fun figure. While I am keeping my fingers crossed for Slash in wave six, I hope Super7 does a Warrior Metalhead Michelangelo repaint at some point for this guy.
