Stripe (Gremlins (Neca)) Review
Stripe
Gremlins (Neca) (Neca)Gremlins was already a pretty dark movie to begin with, but the original concept was a lot darker. Not only were the titular creatures more murderous than mischievous, but cute little Gizmo was going to turn into one as well. However, Spielberg felt that the audience would love Gizmo too much to see that happen to him, so they made his gremlin form a separate character, Stripe. I did say I would be doing more Gremlins reviews, didn’t I? So time to keep things going with a review of the evil gremlin leader.

NECA once again went the “original poster art” route when it comes to packaging for this figure, and the poster used here is much like the one used with the ultimate Gremlin… except Stripe has busted through it with “WE’RE HERE!” written on it with crayon. The box itself is nice and collector-friendly like always, with few ties to work with.

First thing’s first about the sculpt, everything from the head down is recycled from the ultimate Gremlin. Considering how pretty much every gremlin looked the same in the movie, it’s no surprise NECA would want to re-use parts. Don’t let Stripe’s big smile on the box fool you, the actual figure is a lot meaner looking, with angrier brows and a thin frown, which is hinged. His mohawk is actually synthetic hair, and it looks nice. Hey, they did it before with the original figure made back in 2003, so why not do it again here? The paint here is nice and clean, and there’s no stray marks or bleed. Stripe stands at 6” just like the regular gremlin, and the articulation is the same as well – ears, jaw, head, neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, chest, hips, knees, calves, and ankles – and the joints moved a bit better here.

Stripe doesn’t have much in terms of accessories, but what he has is pretty good. The first accessory is a big chainsaw. The detail and paint look great on it (“serious business dave”), and Stripe can hold it well. The second one is a skateboard, and it looks just as nice. The wheels on it actually move, and Stripe can balance on it well, even with the big chainsaw in his hands. Finally, there’s a little buzzsaw blade. It’s not super impressive like the other accessories, but it’s a nice addition.

Stripe definitely proves himself to be a fun figure, and he’s one of my favorites from the company. Sure, he doesn’t have a whole lot of accessories, but he’s still enjoyable in his own right, and I’d suggest getting him for your collection.
