Ash (Evil Dead 2) (Evil Dead) Review
Ash (Evil Dead 2)
Evil Dead (Neca)2021 marks the 40th anniversary of a couple films, including the original Evil Dead movie. Sam Raimi’s cult classic still holds up well after all these years thanks to its great story and special effects, and it did well enough initially to warrant sequels, video games, comic books, a remake, and a TV series. NECA has dabbled in the franchise before, doing figures coming from both the sequels, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, and the Starz Ash vs. Evil Dead series, and an Ash coming from the original movie is due out next year to celebrate the anniversary of the one that started the gory mayhem. But for now, their first ultimate Ash, based off the second movie, is showing up again in retailers, mainly Target.

I’ve talked about the ultimate packaging before, so I’m not going to say much here. It’s a window box with an opening flap on the front, a single piece of tape keeping the top shut, and only a single plastic tie holding the figure in. It’s simple and easy to get everything out, though I do love how we got Ash’s severed possessed hand flipping you off when you open the flap.

Ash’s sculpt is like 85% reused from ED2 figures NECA had done before, and I’ll discuss the main difference when going over articulation. The head is a pretty dead-on likeness of Bruce Campbell, with a chiseled jaw and a rather aghast look, and there’s an alternate head as well. The extra head depicts Ash when possessed by evil, with sunken eyes and hideous jagged teeth, and it looks very good. Standing around 6 7/8” tall, his body is pretty well done. His right arm notably has a bandaged stump instead of a hand, due to him having to chop it off when it gets possessed (though there is an extra arm option which I’ll talk about below). The shirt is a piece of soft plastic covering the harder plastic body below, and the crotch piece is the same material to allow the hips to move well. The paint is pretty good too, with some wash to bring out realism, and plenty of blood and dirt to depict how roughed up Ash gets throughout the story.

Ash is plenty articulated, with most of it remaining unchanged from what NECA did back in 2012. The head is a nice ball-joint, but this is different from what we expect from the company now, with a ball going into the neck and the head connected to a peg. The heads swap easily enough, but you may have to force the alternate head on. He also has swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees, ball-jointed wrists, waist, and ankles, and swivel thighs. There’s also a ball-joint hidden under the shirt, but it doesn’t really move. Every other joint works great, though the waist likes to pop off easily. The main change in this sculpts from past ones is the new hips and waist. I saw in reviews of those figures that they had V-crotch hips and a swivel waist, but they’ve been replaced with better joints here to allow for more poses, and it’s definitely nice.

We got a good amount of accessories here, even though they’re reused just like the sculpt. I already mentioned the extra head, but there’s also an extra right forearm with the hand still attached. More specifically, the possessed hand, but we got a regular right hand as well, and both they and the arms swap easily. Also included is a severed hand, tape deck, Necronomicon, axe, rifle, and the severed possessed head of Linda. All of the accessories look great thanks to well-done sculpting and paint, though it would’ve been nice to get a chainsaw with him. Then again, I guess NECA wanted to cut costs by reusing everything here, except for that new waist and hips, of course.

I love the Evil Dead films, but the second one is my favorite, so it’s no surprise I’m a big fan by this figure. Sure, he’s pretty much “reuse of older figures with some articulation updates”, but he’s definitely fun, and I can’t wait for the ED1 version of Ash coming next year. Now can they get the Army of Darkness license again so we can get an ultimate Medieval Ash?
