Wingnut and Screwloose (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Wingnut and Screwloose
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)As NECA goes deeper into the Turtle hole, we get more and more lesser-known characters from the cartoon. Earlier this month, we saw the release of not one, but two two-packs at Target. One of them is Dirtbag and Groundchuck from “Planet of the Turtleoids” (sure is a popular episode over there at NECA, these are the third/fourth characters from it), and the other is Wingnut and Screwloose, who solely appeared in “Zach and the Alien Invaders”. Much like how they were depicted in the toyline and Archie comics, these two were aliens, but they were villains in the cartoon. Like we’ve seen with previous releases, these sets are hitting stores in large numbers, and that’s definitely a good thing.

The packaging is the same as always, but with slightly updated graphics. In this case, the images of the figures on the sides and back are no longer cropped within the squares, and while a minor update, it’s still pretty nice. I should also note that this box is much wider than usual to accompany the size of Wingnut.

Wingnut is a big guy, and I’m not just saying that because he’s fat. The figure here stands about 7” tall from his feet to the tips of his ears, and he has a wingspan that’s about 6 ½” across. Of course, these are metal wings built onto his smaller organic wings, because no way are those gonna be able to support a chunky guy like him. He definitely looks like how he did in the show, if not better, with all the proper details. The painted outlines and cel shading help to bring out a more animated look, but he suffers from a bit of bleed and stray marks, and the teeth got the worst of it.

We got some nice articulation all around for Wingnut, but he has a few issues. The ball-jointed head and neck combo works great and allows for plenty of tilt and expression. There’s swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, wings, and tail, and the elbows are the double-jointed type that allow for nice arm poses, though the wrist joints are not only tight at first due to paint, but they tend to pop out easily, which can make posing him quite frustrating, and the wing swivels are loose. The ball-jointed chest is pretty wobbly, but you can still get some great tilt from the bottom of the joint. Lastly, the legs move well with ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, hinged knees, and rocker/hinge ankles. The thigh swivels here are hidden on the sculpt, rather than being were the hip joint is at.

The big bat’s partner in crime, Screwloose, is here too, and he’s smaller at about 4 ¼”. I feel that he looks nicer than Wingnut thanks to the cleaner paint, and his expression is perfectly mischievous/sassy. There’s two sculptors credited here, Tony Cipriano and Kushwara Studios, and I assume the latter is responsible for this little guy, but that said, both did a great job with these two. Screwloose is pretty well-articulated too, with a great ball-jointed head with plenty of range, swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, wings, and knees, ball-jointed torso and hips, rocker/hinge knees, and swivel tail. He has four arms, and the gripping hands on the top pair can be swapped with the open hands on the lower pair, allowing for some different display options.

There isn’t a whole lot of accessories included with these two, but considering how they were only in one episode, I’m not surprised. Wingnut has clawing and gripping hands that you can swap out the fists with, along with a big blaster. Screwloose doesn’t really have anything to call his own aside from a dynamic stand. This is the same one we got with the Turtles in Time Baxter, and it allows you to pose him in various flying poses. Three paper comic books are included as well, and it makes perfect sense if you remember the episode these aliens appeared in. Lastly, we got a sticker sheet with includes a wanted poster for Smash (from “Return of the Shredder”), a “W” emblem for Wingnut inspired by the Playmates figure, and a map that you can stick on the inside of Splinter’s robe like in one episode. I don’t think I’ll be using any of them, though.

Overall, I feel that some of the more casual TMNT fans will pass on these, but diehard fans and completionists won’t want to skip them. Aside from the various issues with Wingnut, this is a pretty fun set, and I’m glad NECA is going for deep cuts like this set. I’m definitely keeping my fingers crossed for a Zach in the future to face off against these two.
