R.J. MacReady (Station Survival) (Thing) Review
R.J. MacReady (Station Survival)
Thing (Neca)Undoubtedly John Carpenter’s best work (aside from the original Halloween), The Thing tells a story of an Arctic expedition team dealing with a shapeshifting alien. Just a year before the film’s 40th anniversary, NECA got the license in 2021 and put out not just one, but two versions of Kurt Russell’s character R.J. MacReady. Here, I’ll be reviewing the second version, known as the “Station Survival” release. Good luck finding either version of this guy at retail, though. He’s pretty popular.

Like always, NECA is using poster art for these ultimate releases, and I like the art used here with MacReady holding the flamethrower. There are also some good shots of the figure all around the box, and it all just pops. You do have to remove some tape and twist ties for the figure and accessories, but it’s all easy to get out.

Standing at around 7 ¼” tall, the sculpt of MacReady here is the same as his first release, but with different head and hand sculpts and a belt with gun holster. The head sculpt, with a somewhat worried expression, looks nice. While I feel that it’s a bit off from Russell and is a bit lacking in detail, it’s still a recognizable sculpt. The second head, with a hood pulled over it, has a stern look, and it gives a bit more variety to your display. His outfit is nicely detailed, from the heavy coat to his boots, and the clean paint helps to bring everything out. The gloves he comes wearing are two separate pieces, the hands and the cuffs, with the cuffs just sliding onto the forearms.

There’s plenty of articulation here so you can get MacReady into the desired pose. The ball-jointed head is a bit restricted by the hair, but not by too much. The swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists work well for poses with the different accessories, though the elbows are a bit tight out of the box, so work them carefully. There is a ball-jointed chest hidden underneath the coat, allowing for more dynamic poses. Working our way down from that are swivels at the waist, thighs, and boots, ball-jointed hips, and swivel/hinge knees and ankles. Everything moves nice and well on the figure, but make sure to take care when first posing in case of tightness.

The number of accessories here allow for plenty of display options. I already mentioned the extra head and both heads swap easily, though you’ll have to heat up the hole in the extra head to fit it on more easily. There are seven hands here, the default gloved hands, and five bare hands – a pair of gun grips, a pair of looser grips, and a tightly gripping right. All of them swap easily and work with the various accessories. The big thing here is the flamethrower. It has plenty of detail and fits well into the gloved or gripping hands. Be careful with it, however. The straps are hard to get on and you can break the handle trying to fit it in the hands if you’re not careful (it already happened to me and I had to reglue it). The petri dish of blood and wire are included, allowing you to recreate the famous “blood test” scene (there is a name on the dish, but I’m not spoiling anything for you). Also here for MacReady to hold are a revolver, pickaxe, and bundle of dynamite (“Yeah, fxxk you yoo!”). Rounding things off are two effect pieces, a flame to attach to the flamethrower, and a blood splash to attach to the petri dish.

When it comes down to which MacReady is the best one to get, I’d recommend getting this one. He has the more iconic accessories, and if you already own the first one, you can combine the accessories from both for the best display option. NECA has already promised some creatures for ’22, but I hope we get more humans as well. And Mondo’s planning a sixth-scale MacReady that I may go for…
