Fugitoid (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics) Review
Fugitoid
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)Anyone who’s familiar with the NECA TMNT line should know that it didn’t start with the cartoon or movie adaptations, but of course, the original comics that started it all. The four turtles were released in their original Mirage designs back in 2008, and they’re considered some of the company’s best work. Nowadays, a whole set of them can cost you up to a thousand dollars, and some have settled on just getting bootlegs of them. NECA is well aware of how popular they were, and they already put out a Foot Clan four-pack and a LootCrate-exclusive Shredder years after those initial figures, but now they’re officially reviving the line. The first character here is Fugitoid, a character that was actually created before the Turtles. Fitting choice to kick it off, isn’t it?

The original figures can in clamshell packaging, something that NECA has mostly abandoned nowadays in favor of window boxes. Fugitoid’s happens to be more of a trapezoidal shape, which is pretty unusual. The graphics are nice, with new artwork done by co-creator Kevin Eastman. I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing this style with future releases.

Fugitoid has a somewhat simple design, meaning that it was pretty easy to translate him into three dimensions. Comparing him to how he looked in the comics, they pretty much nailed his appearance, and did a good job of hiding his articulation within the sculpt. What really brings out his appearance is the paint, though, with a blend of blue and gray all around, and the painted shading makes it look as if he jumped right off the page. I know some people may not be fans of it, but I like it. He only stands around 5 ½” tall, but he’s not meant to be taller than the turtles.

Because of Fugitoid’s design, his articulation is different from what we’d usually get from a NECA figure. His thin arms and legs have bendable wires inside of them, and they can hold a pose really well, and they also swivel at both ends. Aside from that, there’s a ball-jointed head/neck combo that allows him to look up and down and all around, as well as a ball at the chest, and swivels at the shoulders, hands, and hips. Some of the joints are tight as first, but they freed up easily. It can be pretty hard to keep him standing in most poses, and the lack of peg holes in the feet doesn’t help.

A good deal of accessories is included here, and they’re designed not just to work with Fugitoid, but with the old Mirage turtles as well. He comes with gripping hands by default, but he also comes with relaxed and expressive hands. They all swap easily, but the relaxed hands are a tighter fit. Various blasters are included here, including two small pistols, a large firearm, and a Triceraton blaster, all of which he can hold easily. The “handcuffs” (not sure what else to call them) the Triceratons used are included here as well, though they only fit on his arms without the hands one. Finally, we got the “Gravitic Equalizer” from the Donatello one-shot, which is a nice extra. Could this be a hint towards a Kirby in the future?

While the Mirage figures will be at comic stores and online retailers, this figure hit Target first as part of their “Haulathon” event, and may show up at the regular spots that aren’t Target or Walmart soon. There are two versions of this figure, but the differences are minor. The regular version is what I got, but there’s also a “Signature” edition with slightly different graphics for the packaging, as well as Eastman’s autograph. And that version costs $100. I’m sorry, what? Should we really be included to spend that much on a figure that normally costs $33 just for some guy’s autograph? Yeah, fxxk that. It’d probably be much cheaper to go see him at a con and get the box signed instead.

Fugitoid has proven himself to be a great figure and good start to the return of what began NECA’s relationship with the half-shell heroes. While I may not get the original figures they did, it’s been confirmed that we’ll be getting newly sculpted turtles, and I wait for the day those are revealed. I’m guessing it’ll be a four-pack for SDCC, and that it’ll be a pre-order that won’t show up until near the end of the year like last year, but I’m more than willing to wait it out.
