Ace Duck and Mutagen Man Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Well, this was a halfway unexpected release. Let’s face it, nobody expected Ace Duck to be a part of the toon line because he never really was a character on the show. Most he got was a brief cameo on the Turtles’ TV in “Attack of Big MACC”, with the only thing established about him is that he had a series of films. That sole appearance was enough reason for NECA to put him in the line, I guess. Ace’s appearance in the show wasn’t all too different from how he looked in the original toyline, except he didn’t have any wings. This figure, on the other hand, does have his wings, and they have a nice feathery appearance. Ace has a removable hat and two different heads: a wide-eyed head with a grin, and an angrier expression with an open beak. The beaks can be swapped as well, which is a nice touch. The rest of the figure looks great, with a nice texture on the chest, and a belt with a gun holster. I feel that I should point out that his legs are recycled from Vernon, but that’s the only real reuse with this set. The paint is clean all around, and I’m pretty sure the rocket and feathers on the back of his jacket and something that a person at NECA cam up with, but it’s definitely cool. Ace stands around 6 3/8” tall without the hat on, and his wingspan measures about 6 ½”. There’s plenty of articulation on Ace, allowing for a ton of different poses. The ball-jointed head/neck combo lets him look up and down and all around, and there’s also a ball chest hidden under the jacket. The arms are outfitted with swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders, elbows, and wrists, and the elbows are the double-jointed type, and we all know how awkward those tend to look. The rest of the joints are swivel/hinge wings and ankles, swivel waist and thighs, ball-socket hips, and double-hinged knees. Yes, there were a few tight joints, but not on the wrists this time! The knees, waist, and I think and elbow hinge were where he was tight, and some force was needed to free them up. Moving onto accessories, Ace has not only two heads, but eight hands, including a pair of fists, a pair of pointing hands, a pair of vertically hinged grips, an open right, and a thumbs-up left. The pistol and revolver are simple, but look great in his hands, and the two white “egg” grenades are a nice throwback to the original figure. I really like the included film reel and VHS tape, being nice accessories if you want to display your figures holding a movie night. Lastly, we got a poster for one of Ace’s movies, printed on a nice thick paper. The other half of this two-pack is Mutagen Man, who like Ace, only appeared in one episode. But unlike Ace, he had a major role in his sole episode. A delivery man turned hideous freak after falling into a vat of mutagen, Shredder made the poor guy do his dirty work. Comparing Mutagen Man’s cartoon design to his Playmates design, the main change was his insides, being a skull-like head on a spinal cord rather than a jumble of organs. They replicated his appearance pretty well here, and he too has two different heads: angry and worried. To swap out the heads, you flip up the sides of the suit then pop the top off, remove the clear front, pull out the spine and head, and pop the head off the ball on the spine. The fit of the angry head is pretty tight, but it’s not too hard to pop on and off. There’s a bit of bleed around the gray metal parts on the limbs, but other than that, the paint is done well. MM stands shorter than Ace, standing around 5 1/8” tall. Like Ace, Mutagen Man has a great enough deal of articulation to get him into all sorts of poses. Since he doesn’t really have a torso, there’s no movement there, but the head has two ball-joints going into it: the spine and the back of the body. There’s a hinged jaw on both heads as well, allowing him to express himself a bit more. The rest is pretty standard, with swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, and ball-socket hips. The wrists were stuck tight with paint are first, but that’s a regular problem with this line. MM is well outfitted with goodies, including the aforementioned two heads, seven hands (fists, tight and wide grips, and open left), a blaster, and what I assume is a tank of mutagen. IIRC, the blaster was actually used by Baxter in one episode, but it should fit him too (I haven’t tried yet). It would’ve been nice if we had an open right hand as well (like how Ace should have gotten an open left). NECA definitely put out another winner here. Ace is such an unexpected addition to the line and lots of fun at the same time, and Mutagen Man is enjoyable as well. While Mutagen Man was pretty much inevitable considering how he got his own episode, I guess they chose Ace to go along with him since they couldn’t think of anyone else, and they made the right decision. -4/27/2022 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
