Turtles in Disguise! (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Turtles in Disguise!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)This may be it, guys. The pinnacle of Turtle figures.

When this set was first revealed in late 2020, early 2021, I was impressed and couldn’t wait to find it in stores. But even as TMNT was getting a better presence at my local Targets, I could never find it. So when NECA announced that you could get it directly through them via pre-orders on their site, I jumped right at the chance. These pre-orders shipped out earlier this year, and you will not believe how happy I am to get one.

Since this is a four-pack, the box is really long, but they also made it special. The fifth panel “flap” has some great artwork on the front, and the sides, top, and other side of the flap have all sorts of little references to the cartoon only dedicated fans will get. There are two plastic trays on the inside that hold everything, but there’s barely any plastic ties to worry about, with only one each holding in the four turtles. There’s still some tape to deal with, but that’s a minor issue.

The sculpts for the turtles are pretty much the same with each one aside from the belts, and are mostly the same ones we’ve seen before, but the heads are all new. Rather than repaint the ones that the arcade figures had, they sculpted ones that actually look like how they did in the show. Each turtle has two different heads, one happy, and one angry. Half of the heads have open mouths, and half have closed ones. And like with the quarter-scale turtles that they’re currently putting out, the tops and bottoms of the heads are separate pieces, allowing for eight different expressions for each Turtle. The paint is mostly clean with little bleeding and nicks, but the finish is inconsistent. The heads have a matte finish, but the bodies are a glossier one, which I hate. All four turtles stand 5 ½” tall, just right for a 7” scale.

The articulation remains mostly unchanged as well. The ball-jointed head/neck combo works great like always, and the new swivel/hinge bandana tie allows it to flow in various directions. The arms are outfitted with swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists (vertical for Leo and Raph, and horizontal for Don and Mike), as well as swivel biceps for more natural-looking arm poses. The legs received the most changes, with the swivel/hinge hips becoming ball-socket joints, and the ball-jointed ankles now being swivel/hinge joints, allowing for better posing in the former and more range in the latter. The swivel thighs and double-hinged knees are the same, so is the ball-jointed chest, though it has more range now. The joints move well like always, but there’s the usual stuck joints at the elbows and wrists, requiring warm water to free them up.

Before I get onto the accessories, I want to talk about why this set is called “Turtles in Disguise”. Out of the box, each turtle is wearing a trenchcoat and pants, both softgoods. They all look great, don’t interfere with the articulation, and are a neat addition overall. However, getting them on and off the figures can be a pain. Completing the disguised look are a fedora for each turtle, and a set of those weird human masks they sometimes wore in the show. The masks are a third set of heads, with two smiling and two frowning, but they’re a little tighter fit than the other heads.

As for the other accessories, we have eight extra pairs of hands, with four flat, two thumbs up, one pointing, and one loosely gripping (so Raph can hold his sai between his fingers). Add this to the regular grips, and you get a total of twenty-four hands. A lot, ain’t it? They all swap easily, but one of the thumbs up hands has a busted joint. The turtles’ signature weapons are also included (katanas, staff, sai, and nunchucks), and a plethora of episode-specific goodies, including two whole pizzas, a pizza slice, a book, Pigeon Pete (not to be confused with the guy from the 2012 show), a “Weird” hat, a boombox, and a skateboard with rolling wheels (but no footpeg). I do wish they included stuff like the spinning nunchuck piece and grappling hook shell, but it’s just my preference.

Aside from a few flaws, this is undoubtedly one of the best TMNT releases NECA ever put out IMO. The new heads look great, and I love all the various accessories. The set costs $125, which is a good deal for a set like this (especially when later 4-packs like Channel 6 and the style guide turts were more). If you manage to find this set at retail value (easier said than done), I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it.
