Ash (40th Anniversary) Evil Dead (Neca)After years of working with the Evil Dead franchise, NECA finally got around to the one that began it all. “Groovy.” Last year marked the 40th anniversary for a few different horror films, including Halloween II, An American Werewolf in London, and the first Evil Dead movie, the independent film that made Bruce Campbell a star and Sam Raimi a notable director. While many have given plenty of attention to the film’s sequels and TV continuation, the original never got all that much, but now it’s gotten the much-deserved NECA treatment. As usual, NECA goes the route of using the original movie poster for the front of the box, with figure photos on the sides and back. They decided to get a bit creative here and make it feel like something you rented from Blockbuster or whatever video store you frequented back in the day. The “HORROR” sticker (which isn’t really a sticker), and VHS-styled NECA logo add a feeling of nostalgia to it, and it’s something a bit more than what NECA usually does. While the likeness on the ED2 Ash I reviewed a while back was pretty good, the one here is much nicer. Three different heads are included here, with his main one being a neutral expression. The second is a bit madder, with a lowered brow and open mouth. The third head is somewhat startled, and is looking off to the side, as if he got caught off-guard by a loud noise or Deadite. All three heads look great, and the clean paint certainly helps. The clothes have sculpted wrinkles on them, and mostly clean paint on the buttons and belt buckle. Keep in mind this is before he gets sprayed with blood, so while there’s none of that, there is some wash on his attire to make it look more realistic. Ash stands around 6 ¾” tall, standing in the company’s usual 7” scale. Ash’s articulation, while not a whole lot of joints, is still good enough to manage a great deal of poses. He has a ball-jointed head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, ball-socket hips, and swivel thighs. It’s all standard for the company, and there’s no issues working with the joints. The ED2 Ash figures had ball-jointed chests hidden under their shirts, but this one doesn’t seem to have it. The shirt overlay is probably too thick for it to work anyways. Moving onto accessories, aside from the extra heads, Ash also has two extra right hands, designed to hold his various accessories, and they swap easily. For fighting the evil dead, Ash has a shotgun, axe, and chainsaw, all with nice paint, and the arm articulation is good enough for two-handed weapon poses. Take a bit of care with the shotgun when fitting it into his trigger hand, as a small bit of the firearm broke off. Rounding out all that are a tape player and lantern, and the former definitely looks nice. I’m surprised the Necronomicon isn’t included, but I assume they’re saving that for a future release. Maybe a bloody Ash? I was hyped for this figure for a long while now, and when it surprised dropped at Target as part of their Haulathon event, I couldn’t be more excited to get ahold of it. Once I finally got him, he proved to be even better than the previous Ash I had gotten. If they can do Army of Darkness again and give us another Ash (as well as Evil Ash), I’d be a very happy man. -5/08/2022 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
