Prince John (Robinhood) (Disney (Super7)) Review
Prince John (Robinhood)
Disney (Super7) (Super7)“Too late to be known as John the First, he’s sure to be known as John the worst; a pox on that phony king of England!”

Super7 seemingly likes to balance the good with the bad, including both heroes and villains in their Thundercats and TMNT lines. So out of the three figures in their first wave of Disney Ultimates, only one of them is a villain: Prince John from Robin Hood. I assume they did him before Robin not just for variety, but because he’s a fan favorite.

Like I said with Mickey, the packaging art is unique across all three figures in the wave, with a slipcover that’s colored gold and the window box itself being mostly colored purple. And yes, a character bio is included on the back. In short, same cues, different graphics.

John’s sculpt has been changed the least from the initial renders, with the main difference being the colors, which are much brighter than what we first saw. The heads have been notably improved, but it’s worth noting that they don’t have whiskers. I guess they couldn’t find a way to apply those, and I can forgive it. Three different heads are included with him: a happy head (which he comes wearing), a neutral head (replacing the crazy-eyed one from the renders), and a “my crown is too big” head, with squinted eyes and a dopey mouth. The default head has a removable crown, but the other two don’t (believe me, I tried). Wouldn’t it have been better just to have one crown that attaches onto all three heads? I guess the thought never occurred to them. John has a tall, slender body, but short, squat legs. That’s not an error, it was how he was designed. Much like Mickey and his robe, the prince’s red robe (he dons a blue one after Robin Hood swipes it) is softgoods, and it fits him pretty well. The paint is nice and clean, though I’m not a fan of the semi-glossy look. John is the tallest of the first wave, which isn’t surprising considering the other two figures are a mouse and a puppet, standing 6 ½” without the crown on, and that thing adds an extra half-inch to him.

The articulation here is much similar to Mickey, with few differences. There’s a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, and tail, and swivel thighs, just like the mouse has. However, John’s hips go diagonally into the body rather than right into the sides of the pelvis, but they still have a good range of motion as they work hand-in-hand with the thighs (which are a bit tricky to work with, though). He has some stability issues as well with the knees and ankles, but it’s none to hard to find that sweet spot to keep him upright. John also gets an extra joint at the waist, and despite being a ball-joint, it doesn't have a lot of tilt.

The accessory count, while not as big as Mickey, still makes sense for the phony king. There are the two extra heads I mentioned already, and they swap easily. Seven different hands are also included, with an open pair, two different pairs of fists (one with jewels and one without), and a gripping right. The open hands are kinda tough to pop on and off, and the gripping hand had a stuck joint that needed hot water to get freed up. His (somewhat) faithful servant Sir Hiss is here, of course, and in two different sculpts! The first one is a happy, coiled-up Hiss, and the second one is designed as if his master is strangling him. Both have great sculpts (especially the second) one, and both have a swivel/hinge head so they can look around. Lastly, we got John’s mirror, something that belonged to his mother, and it has a nice reflective surface.

While not quite as impressive as Mickey, Prince John is still a pretty impressive figure. Since he wears a blue robe for most of the film, howzabout S7 make a second version with it? Maybe make the colors more accurate (darker fur and yellow eyes), and head and hand parts to display him sucking his thumb. The arm articulation is already good enough to manage that pose, so what was stopping them from doing it here?
