Tidalwave with Ramjet Transformers - Armada (Hasbro)While the Armada cartoon mostly flew under my radar, the toys were quite fun, but certainly had their flaws. Here's one now. So, Tidal Wave is something of an oddity: Far more out-of-scale than most, there was no way they were making this beast close to the right size, so we get a Voyager-class version instead. Still a fair bit taller than average, head and shoulders above most of my army. The usual spread of joints we're used to these days was not so standard back then- in this case, ratcheted swivel/hinges at the shoulders, elbows, and hips, plus hinged knees. Which would be decent if the knees didn't bend sideways. No, really. He can stand around, maybe gesturing or doing a Frankenstein walk, but no dynamic poses from the waist down. Between that and the odd purple and green areas, we're not off to a good start. But there's more to be had here. For starters, the altmode(s). Going directly from robot to vehicle, we now have an impressive-looking battleship, bristling with guns and Minicon ports. Most of the action features come into play here: two firing missiles along the sides, and synchronized turret movement via the port near the center. It's all well integrated, allowing for the awkwardly long missiles, and legitimately kind of fun still. Then the thing separates into the Dark Fleet: a gunboat, troop landing craft, and aircraft carrier. At this point, we get access to the elevator on the deck of the carrier. Pushing it up through the deck reveals Ramjet, TW's partner. Rammy is pretty simple, with nubby arms and both legs molded as one, but his jet mode is pretty good. He and other 'cons can theoretically mingle, but he's just so tiny. Necessary to fit in the elevator, I'm sure. Finally, if you have Armada Megatron handy, the Fleet converts (barely) into a suit of armor for him. Gauntlets and a backpack, mostly. Not heavy enough to cause balance issues, but I gotta admit, it's a pretty cluttered look. Hasbro kind of fumbled here, not quite nailing the engineering- or the color scheme, if I'm being honest. He's pretty blocky by modern standards, too. But he's a good background character on a crowded shelf, and still a bit fun to transform. No regrets. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
