Snakebite Super Naturals (Tonka)Super Naturals is an odd beast. Tonka wasn't trying very hard here in terms of story- or marketing, for that matter- but whoever they had working on the toys clearly had a lot of passion, because these things deserved more than they got. Part of the first and only wave, Snakebite here is rocking a vaguely Egyptian snake-cultist look, which seems at odds with his undead pirate master and armored elemental comrade, but that's how Super Naturals rolled: it doesn't have to make sense, as long as it looks awesome. Simple swivel joints at the shoulders and hips give precious few posing options, but they do at least leave the sculpt largely unbroken apart from the T-crotch hips. Blanketed as he is in diamond-shaped scales, this isn't quite the boon it is on Skull, but the orange-on-copper is pretty fun, even if the grey mummy-legs do clash a bit. As with the other large figures, the face and chest are one big 3D hologram, although the hood more or less neuters the effect, unlike some of the others. With that and the chestplate removed, though, we once again see a very impressive design, the expected snake-man alternating with a bearded and tattooed sorceror. Notably, the sculpture they photographed for this has a real beard, which had to have been added one hair at a time. Now that's dedication! The shield on mine is a bit warped, so the snake hologram is kind of iffy, but oh well. Still looks better than the staff, which is somewhat like a caduceus minus the stick. And with a noose at the bottom. At least it glows in the dark. And also hinges open and shut. Not my favorite, really, but he is legitimately fun to stare into. If only the face would show through without stripping him down, he'd objectively be pretty good, but as it is, he's mostly just kinda there. Not that this is a bad design or anything, he's just outclassed by his compatriots. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
