Bombshell (Transformers (Super7)) Review
Bombshell
Transformers (Super7) (Super7)The first wave of Super7’s Transformers Ultimates is giving us quite the varied line-up, with the face of the franchise, a regular character in a specific variant, a lesser-known character, and a recognizable character in an unrecognizable version. The last of those is the Insecticon Bombshell, but his figure here is based off of his “Action Masters” figure instead of his regular design. We already got Banzai-Tron in this wave, why not give him a friend from his original subline?

The Action Masters design for Bombshell seems to have more in common with his original toy design than his cartoon design. The torso is the most similar aspect, and the mouthplate is something shared across the three versions of him. I could go on and on comparing the different ways he looked, so let’s just cut to the chase and talk about S7’s version. Four Horsemen is responsible once more for the sculpting, and they did a great job recreating Bombshell in a 7” scale (I assume the original figure was smaller than this), though this figure actually stands about 7 ¾” tall. A lot of the details are the same, with his lower legs being the only area where the sculpt is most different. While everything looks great, the sculpt can get in the way of articulation a little bit, but I’ll discuss that when I get to it.

As for the paint, the purple color matches his old counterpart, but what was maroon/bronze there is orange here. I’m not complaining about the change, but I would’ve liked a bit more variety in his colors. The arms are almost completely solid black with the exception of some shiny gray parts (with small lines around the elbows being added), and a few lighter shades of color could make him pop more. I guess the goal was to be a near-complete recreation of the old figure, but some upgrades to his colors wouldn’t hurt.

The articulation on Bombshell is much like the rest of the line, with a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, hinged knees, and an ab crunch. It sounds good, but as I stated, the sculpt can get in the way of it. The shoulders on this guy are worse than Banzai-Tron’s, with very little hinge to them, and the ankles aren’t all that useful either. On the bright side, there’s nothing blocking his elbow movement, and you’ll still be able to get some nice poses out of him, just nothing crazy with the arms. Also, the thighs were stuck tight when I first got mine, but some time in the freezer fixed that.

Last but not least, are the accessories. Bombshell comes with a pair of fists, but those can be swapped out for a pair of gripping hands and a pair of… tighter gripping hands? Those ones can’t really hold his accessories, so what good are they? A pair of open hands would’ve been a better inclusion. Aside from those, he has the blasters from both his Action Masters figure and his original G1 figure. While they lack paint, he looks great holding one or both of them in his hands. The best thing here is his AM partner Needler, who’s been recreated near-perfectly here. It's designed to plug into his master’s back, and he also gets a ball/hinge head that can be popped off and placed onto the main figure’s neck joint. Fun!

While not quite as cool as the other Action Master in this wave, and his articulation doesn’t go too well with the sculpt, Bombshell is still a neat figure, and his partner isn’t just a hunk of plastic like Razor-Sharp was. It would be great if they can do his toy or cartoon design in the future, but this take on him looks cool enough to satisfy me.
