Donatello (Dark Turtle) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)To be honest, I thought we'd be seeing only one of these a year. Sure glad I was wrong. As with last wave, the cartoon-themed crate was supposed to come last, but since the video game crate was far behind, that makes this one the third in order. This set actually has two figures, the second of which you could only get if you paid for all four crates at once. And NECA chose some nice inclusions for this crate. The packaging for both follows the same motif as the rest of the toon line, simple yellow and green and character artwork on the front. The cross sell, rather than being for the regular release figures, is for the other LC-only toon guys. Having to deal with those plastic ties is still frustrating, and I wish NECA would do away with them. The first figure is Donatello, specifically the "Dark Turtle." This particular look for him came from season 7's "Night of the Dark Turtle," where getting zapped by a machine led to him becoming a Batman wannabe. I've wanted this look for a while, and I'm glad they did him, even if it's through LootCrate. Both Jason Frailey and Trevor Zammit are credited as sculptors for this figure, but who did what is unknown. Nevertheless, they did a good job replicating his dark knight-inspired costume from the episode, and there is a bit of reuse from regular turtles here. The head has the same two-piece feature as the Turtles in Disguise set does, and they redid the mouth a bit so there aren't any unsightly mold lines on the nose. The mouth and top of head are semi-glued together, meaning you'll need to force them apart. Standing around 5 1/2" tall, the Dark Turtle gets a big softgoods cape that has a posable wire in it, allowing for some dynamic looks. The paint is clean, with very few blips. The standard turtle articulation is here, with ball-jointed head, neck, and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, ball-socket hips, and double-hinged knees. The neck is a bit too high up on the joint, though, and at first, his joints were very stiff, so have some way to heat up the plastic on hand. There are only three accessories included with Donatello: a pointing right hand, an open palm left, and one of the smoke bombs from the episode. I wish some more stuff was included here, like some additional hands, more episode-based devices, and an extra mouth, but I can live. Then there's the figure that came exclusively with the four-crate plan; a punk by the name of Scrag. In the first season, he and some other goons hung out alongside Bebop and Rocksteady, and they too got mutated, but whereas the warthog and rhino became series regulars, Scrag and the others faded into obscurity. Thankfully, one of them was lucky enough to get made into a toy, and the others should be coming next year. Like the Dark Turtle, two sculptors - Eric Barnett and Kushwara Studios - are credited for Scrag. His look just screams "80's punk," with his sunglasses, torn shirt and coat, and weird hair. Standing around 6 1/2", Scrag is tall and lean, and I'm fairly sure he shares parts with the earlier-released Vernon. The head is the best detail, and the angular facial features and odd hair are replicated well. The paint is just as good as here as on Donatello, aside from some fuzziness around the hair. He has the same joints as the turtle, but he gets double-jointed swivel/hinge elbows and swivel shins. There may be a waist swivel, and if there is, mine won't budge. In the few episodes he appeared in, Scrag got turned into a giant bat, and extra parts are included to portray his shift from man to beast. In original promo shots, the bat head looked drastically different, but before release, it was remade to be screen-accurate, and while the current head looks pretty goofy, I prefer accuracy over anything else. The heads swap at the neck, but the human head prefers to pop off over the neck, so some heat will be needed so you can properly swap them. There's also a set of mutant forearms with grasping hands, and the hands can be swapped between forearms. Promo shots showed him with closed hands, and I'm bummed they didn't make it onto the final figure. Lastly, there's a revolver and a sledgehammer, for when we wants to raise some hell. Overall, he's more outfitted than Donatello, and I'm happy with that. Now that the figures are out of the way, I can get to talking about everything in this crate, and there's more here than what the last two had. Instead of a shirt, there's a "Ninja Pizza" apron, which should be cool for when you're baking, well, pizza. The Pizza Monster oven mitts are a nice surprise, and they go well with the apron. The PRTY WGN license plate is the most unique thing, though, because as far as I know, you don't get stuff like this in loot boxes often. Lastly, there's a simple Triceraton pin. Nothing special, but it looks nice. Each of these crates is better than the last, and it's not hard to impress when the first crate in this wave was practically garbage. Scrag is an excellent deep-cut, and Dark Turtle Donatello gives me one of most-wanted characters. If neither of those really impress you, there's plenty of other neat things in this crate, and overall, I really like what we got here. Now one more crate and this nightmare will finally be over… - 12/13/22 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
