Doc Brown (1985 Version) Back to the Future (Neca) (Neca)I'll admit I haven't really been collecting NECA's Back to the Future line. After I got Biff, I was somewhat satisfied and tapped out of the line. Back in the fall of '22, though, I came across a new release in the line while on the search for Ninja Turtle figures. I figured if I was to pick up something NECA at Target, it may as well be this guy. The front of the box is designed after the plutonium case, coming from the scene where Doc has this specific get-up. It also specifies that this is the third Doc by NECA, not that that's really important, though. There's some tape and plastic ties to remove, and once those are out of the way, it's easy to get everything out. Doc Brown's sculpt is done by both Jason Frailey and Kyle Windrix, but it's not specified who did what on the figure. The default head gives him a wide-eyed, unsettled look, but if that one doesn't suit you, you can swap it out for a happy, confident Doc head. Both heads are very spot-on to Christopher Lloyd, and fit the character well. The paint is pretty good, but I feel the hair needs to be whiter, at least on the sides. Also, if you have the first Doc NECA put out, his goggles can be used with this version, thanks to the gap between the hair and head in the back. This version of Doc gives him his hazmat suit, and IIRC, this outfit is the first time we see him in the film. Standing around 7 1/4" tall, Doc's suit is covered in wrinkles, giving it a nice, realistic appearance. I'm not sure what that thing is connected to his right wrist, but you can slide it off his fingers. The belt and stopwatch are removable as well, but you'll have to pop off his head and arms to take it off. Be mindful of the little tools in the bag; the screwdriver broke off and I didn't notice it until later. The paint on the body is just as good as the head, but there are some uneven edges here and there. Doc may be an old man, but he moves incredibly well. The ball-jointed head and neck combo is always nice to have, and he gets some extreme range on it. The swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists allow for nice arm poses, though these elbows are single-jointed unlike the other Part 1 Doc. I guess all the complaints about broken double-elbows on the Marty figures are why they're like this. There is a ball-jointed chest hidden under the suit, and it moves surprisingly well, though I'm not sure if there's a waist joint. The legs are standard NECA will ball-socket hips, swivel thighs and shins, and swivel/hinge knees and ankles. While there's a lot of poses Doc can take, getting him standing can be tricky at times. Moving onto accessories, Doc has the aforementioned extra head, and swapping them out wasn't too hard. He also gets a pair of gripping hands and, amazingly enough, extra arms. These arms have the sleeves of the hazmat suit covering them entirely, along with gloves. These arms also get a gun-grip right hand, but the hands pop off easily on them, so keep that in mind. One thing to note is that both pairs of arms share the same upper arms, so why have them swap at the shoulder instead of the elbow? So you can slide the belt off, of course. Aside from the interchangeable parts, Doc has four other extras. The DeLorean's control is included, and it's hit 88, meaning you're going to see some serious sxxt. The clipboard and notepad are nice inclusions, and I love the little Amblin logo on the latter. Lastly, there's a revolver that fits in the extra gloved hand. Gotta protect himself from those Libyans somehow. I suppose you can also count the belt and stopwatch as an accessory (both are one piece) since you can remove it from the figure, but I would've liked it if at least one of those tools could be removed from his bag. While I haven't really been too interested in NECA's BTTF output, Hazmat Doc proved to be a rather good figure, thanks to a great sculpt and some nice accessories. He also may have been what convinced me to pick up the NECA Store-exclusive accessory set, and I may just have to pick up more from this line. It seems to be a shelf-warmer anyways, so it shouldn't be that hard. - 1/25/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
