Pepe the King Prawn (Muppet Show) Review
Pepe the King Prawn
Muppet Show (Palisades)One of the later Muppets, Pepe was introduced in the short-lived Muppets Tonight, but has since become one of the more notable characters in the franchise. Given that he's the most well-known of the Tonight Muppets, it's no surprised he was the first character from the show to get the Palisades treatment.

Sculpted by Camelot Industrial Artists (with no specific person or people credited), Pepe stands 4" tall up to his hair, making him one of the smaller characters. There's no loss of detail due to his size, however, with a texture on his skin that invokes a furry look (don't think king prawns have fur), and texturing on his jacket as well. Pepe has a bug-eyed look with an open mouth, a common look for him, and his hair and antennae are made out of a softer material. As a king prawn, Pepe has four arms rather than two, and the upper pair of hands have holes in them designed to hold specific accessories. The paint is good for the most part, aside from a few small blemishes here and there.

Pepe has a somewhat simple articulation scheme, with swivels at the neck, wrists, and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, hinged elbows, and T-crotch hips. That doesn't sound like a lot, but keep in mind he has four arms, meaning you'll be able to do quite a bit with what he has. Bicep swivels would've let him do a lot more, but with his small upper arms, I don't think it would've been possible. Unfortunately, the shoulder and elbow joints aren't painted, making them stick out like a sore thumb.

Palisades has made a lot of great accessories, and Pepe has one of their best yet. The deck chair is appropriately in-scale with him, and can fold out and be adjusted like a real chair. Most companies would've done it in plastic, but Palisades went the extra mile and made it out of wood, metal, and cloth, making it all the more realistic. There's even an adjustable umbrella that plugs into the side, allowing for a great display.

For other goodies, Pepe has a hair dryer and pair of binoculars that are designed to peg into the upper hands, and the latter can hang around his neck as well. The pegs fit tightly, so I'd suggest heating up the hands before popping them in. There's also a pair of rubbery flip-flops that slide onto Pepe's feet, a Muppets Tonight lunchbox, and the typical Palisades stand, different from the oval ones that earlier figures had. The stand is too big for Pepe, though, and it can take some force getting the peg into his feet. He's doesn't really need it, however.

Pepe is one of the better releases in the line, thanks to great attention to detail and some very cool accessories. The paint is my only issue with him, and a cleaner job along with paint on the joints would've really improved his appearance. While this guy is near-perfection, I wouldn't mind seeing Diamond take a shot at him.
