REX-1 (From the Files of Pizza Squad) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
REX-1 (From the Files of Pizza Squad)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Part of the charm of the original TMNT cartoon was all the unique one-shot characters. Ranging from pre-existing characters established in toy form, to cool, and sometimes goofy, faces created just for the show. One of such show-specific characters is REX-1, the robotic police officer from "New York's Shiniest." I've been wanting him in figure form for a while, and NECA delivered as part of Haulathon.

The singular figure releases keep up the artwork inspired by the old F.H.E. VHS tapes, and it looks really good. The mixture of this artwork and shots of the figure make for attractive packaging that draws in customers. And of course, there's a front panel that flaps open to reveal what's inside. Make sure to have your scissors on-hand, because there's a lot of those darned ties again.

Sculpted by Brodie Perkins, REX-1 is one of the larger figures in the line at 9" tall. While he's not as tall as Chrome Dome, he matches up with Krang and the Pizza Monster in terms of size. REX is a pretty chunky guy, especially in his upper body, and the two pectoral panels can hinge open to reveal his inner workings. His head sports a blocky jaw, which is also hinged, revealing a small mouth slot underneath. While he's mostly screen-accurate, the lower legs are oversized, especially with those clown feet. I suppose this was done to make him more stable, but I would've preferred screen-accuracy. I also feel the lower part of the chest could have been a bit blockier, as to match the animation more. The paint is pretty good, but there are various areas of fuzzy edges and bleed. I also wish they'd do a better job with the cel shading; the usual tactic of painting the back of the figure a darker shade is pretty lazy to me.

REX moves slightly different from the usual figure, but he can still manage most of the same poses anyone else can get. REX has a ball-jointed head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, hinged elbows, knees, jaw, and chest panels, and ball/socket hips. The joints are pretty stable, but they're also a bit tighter than they need to be. The wrists and ankles will need some hot water to get moving, but those are the only areas. The range in the chest could've been better, and the hips don't kick forward or back very well. It's not perfect, but it works for the figure.

A good amount of accessories are included, all of which come from the episode where this guy made his sole appearance. Plenty of hands are here, with four different pairs - closed, flat-palm, style pose, and vertically-hinged gun grip - along with an extra right hand holding a bolt, and all of them swap easily. The two blaster can be held in REX's hands or plug into the holsters at his waist. He also gets his controller, a can of oil with a straw, and a tongue that goes into the mouth slot, calling back to the scene where April tells him to "hold his tongue." My favorite extras are the VHS tapes, three of them. We've gotten a few already, and it's nice to get some more. Now who do I have to talk to to get some Laserdiscs in this scale?

REX-1 was one of the more unique one-shots in the show, and it's great to finally have him as a figure. He still has his issues, however, one of which is his price. He's a whopping fifty bucks, nearly the cost of a two-pack, and that's because of his size. One wouldn't expect a one-shot character with a high price to sell well, but this guy's been selling out nearly everywhere, but that's just us Turtle fans. I would definitely like to see this guy retooled into one of Shredder's REX clones as an army builder, allowing for recreations of more scenes from the episode.
