Sandy Cheeks Spongebob Squarepants (Super7) (Super7)Bikini Bottom is home to all sorts of interesting characters and creatures, some of which aren't actually sea life. I'm not talking about SpongeBob himself, even though he's a kitchen sponge rather than a sea sponge, but rather Sandy Cheeks, one of his best friends. For her default head, Sandy has a neutral smile, and it's not hard to tell Super7 based the likeness off of old stock art for the show. The head is spot-on and all, but the expression here is rather bland. Fortunately, she gets two extra portraits. One is a shouting expression, clearly going "HI-YA!", and the other is more episode-specific, being her "pet goldfish in a bowl" costume from "Scaredy Pants." The sculpts on the heads are great, but the paint isn't as good. There are a lot of fuzzy edges, along with a mark on the left pupil of the fish head. In addition, the fur on her heads is darker than it should be, and it's more noticeable when you compare it to the color of the neck and tail. As a land critter rather than a sea one, Sandy can't breath in water, so when out on the town, she wears a suit to survive in the wet landscape. The suit is very nice for the most part, but the acorn patch is like twice as big as it should be. The clear helmet is made out of a soft material, and can be popped on and off easily. Her tail is separated from her body in the box, but it plugs into the socket easily and fits on tight. The paint on the suit is well done, and notably cleaner than the heads. Without the helmet on, Sandy stands around 6 1/8" tall, which as I said before, is slightly out of scale with SpongeBob. Sandy's design lends itself to articulation better than SpongeBob's, with plenty of joints worked into her design. The head moves on a ball/socket joint, with some nice tilt to it. There are swivel/hinge joints on the shoulders, elbows, and wrists, and while the shoulders are somewhat restricted, the elbows and wrists move fine, and it's clear the arms were sculpted to get the best range of motion possible. The tail, hips, and knees are also swivel/hinge joints, with the knee joints being located at the top of the boots, which limits their range. There's also a mid-foot hinge, which is definitely nice, but they're tough to move. What really surprised me was a ball-joint at the waist, right at the bottom of the suit, and it tilts forward and back very well, allowing for some dynamic poses. Sandy gets some really cool accessories, calling back to classic episodes of the show. Having three different heads is nice, and they pop on and off the ball easily. Sandy gets four pairs of hands, including open hands, another pair of open hands with pegs on the palms, a pair of gripping hands, and a pair of karate gloves. The gloved hands swivel both where the joints plugs into the forearms and into the hands, allowing for vertically-hinged chopping poses. I also think the pegged hands are a nice touch, as they can hold specific extras the grips cannot. Moving onto all of the specific items, three of the accessories are based off of "Texas," one of Sandy's signature episodes. The hat plugs into the helmet, and the flower can pop off to be replaced with it. The guitar can be held with the gripping hands, but getting in there can be tricky. The lasso is split into two pieces, with the loop part fitting on a ball on the rest of the rope, and the thing as a whole can be held with either the gripping hands or the pegged hands. There's also the jetpack from "Sandy's Rocket," designed to clip around her torso. The flame effect is nice, and it can be removed so you can have the jetpack on without it getting in the way of the tail's socket. Lastly, there's an acorn, because Sandy's a squirrel, of course. It fits on the pegged hands, and is a nice little extra. Sandy is definitely the winner of wave one, thanks to some nice articulation engineering and great episode-specific accessories. While I am excited for Patrick and Squidward in wave two, I will say I'm disappointed in how they cut back on accessories for that wave. Still, if the quality of them is as good as this wave, I won't mind too much. - 5/3/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
