Deadpool Marvel (Neca) (Neca)I think I said it before, and I'll say it again: I'm not a Marvel superfan. While the 90s X-Men cartoon was pretty good, I just stopped watching it, though I'll have to pick it back up one of these days. Another thing I definitely need to watch at some point is the Deadpool movie; I caught a bit of it and it was a wild ride, but until then, I can live out all the crazy Deadpool mayhem with NECA's first - and only - 1/4 "Ultimate" figure of the merc with a mouth. The packaging graphics are simple, but effective. The sides showing the accessories can flip open to reveal various shots of the figure, and when you get all the tape and twist ties out of the way, you'll find everything is easy to take out. There's also a plastic sleeve that slips on over the box, and while it's not much, it does add a bit of protection to the box. The sculpt for Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool was provided by Djordje Djokovic, the same guy who's currently doing NECA's Gargoyles figures. Even under the mask, Wade is able to pull off a wild-eyed expression, and the texture on the mask looks great. The Crimson Comedian gets two extra heads to go with the main one. One of them is the same expression, but the scalp can be removed to reveal his brain underneath. The other head is an unmasked Wade, with decaying skin that sports visible musculature, and an expression just as crazy as the other heads. The paint on all three heads is nice, being mostly clean with plenty of wash, though the brain head is a lighter shade of red. As a 1/4 scale figure, Deadpool is huge, standing around 18 1/2" tall, and is covered head to toe with great texture and detail. For weapon storage, he gets gun and knife holsters on his right leg, and detachable sword scabbards on the back. My favorite aspect of the sculpt is on his feet, with his right sole having an exclamation mark and the left one reading "SNAP!", playing into his fourth-wall-breaking antics. Like with the heads, the body sports mostly clean paint and plenty of wash, but the red finish seems to be inconsistent, and the shoulders are really glossy for some reason. The Regeneratin' Degenerate has plenty of articulation to do his job. The head is a barbell joint, but it's the type with a peg going into the head and a ball in the neck. The arms get swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps, and double-hinged elbows, allowing for great poses. The ab crunch is okay, it just doesn't lean forward as much as I want it to. Below that, we get swivel waist and thighs, swivel/hinge hips and ankles, double-hinged knees, and toe hinges. Most of the joints move well, with the only exception being the thighs. They're stuck tight, and will require a lot of heat/hot water to get moving, but once they're broken free, they'll work well. Just take your time when getting them moving, or you could damage the hips. The Asinine Assassin is loaded with accessories, befitting his "Ultimate" title. There's the two extra heads I mentioned earlier, along with two add-ons for them: a "D-Cool" hat for the exposed brain head, sitting in place of the scalp, and a melted pizza for the unmasked head. For weaponry, Deadpool has two swords, a knife, a sai, and three firearms, my favorite of which is the little automatic gun dubbed "Deadpool's Gun," mainly cause it has a little Deadpool hanger on the end. Other funky extras include firing effects for each of the guns along with a text effect, a stuffed unicorn, a "MR-D" chain, the removable scabbards, and a chimichanga. Rounding things out are seven interchangeable hands: a pair of gun grips, a pair of sword grips, two extra right grips, and a "devil's horns" left. I may not be into Marvel much nor quarter-scale figures, but Deadpool is a lot of fun, thanks to a great sculpt and articulation along with plenty of accessories. It's too bad licensing restrictions have prevented NECA from doing him in a smaller scale, but there's equally fun options like the Amazing Yamaguchi. If you have the space though, do yourself a favor and pick up this guy. - 7/8/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
