Splinter Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)The Mirage Turtles line has given us plenty of unique characters in figure form, such as Renet and the Shredder clones, but it's still making sure to incorporate the characters everyone knows. One of those characters is the Turtles' sensei/father figure, Splinter. Splinter's design stayed pretty consistent for most of the comic's run; the only difference between him in the first and second issues was that he had pupils in the first issue. The figure stays true to his regular design, with his head sporting no pupils, but a calm, stern look. The sculpt, I assume, was done by Tim Miller, with Geoff Trapp and Mike Puzzo on paint duties like always. Said paint has very nice black wash mixed in with the brown fur, giving him both a realistic and comic-accurate look. So far, Splinter is the smallest figure in the Mirage line second to the little Shredder clone, standing only around 3 3/4" with the legs straight. Splinter usually tends to be a short character, often being half the size of the Turtles. Despite his small size, Splinter is still given the same level of detail and articulation everyone else has, and the articulation blends in with the sculpt very well, somewhat thanks to the robe covering up some of the joints. Said robe is cloth along with the belt, and it looks very nice on him. I wish I could make that belt a little tighter so the robe doesn't keep opening up, but that's a minor issue. Splinter gets pretty good articulation, with a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles, and tail, balljointed ankles, swivel thighs, and a bendy wire inside the tail. Everything moved just fine out of the box, though my only area of concern is the chest. I found the joint gave resistance when turned, so I heated it up and popped it apart to find the joint was very thin, which had me worried about breakage, but it freed up more over time. I feel that they could've implemented more movement on this little guy, such as a joint at the base of the neck and mid-foot hinges. To make up for his size, NECA outfitted Splinter with plenty of extras. He gets three pairs of hands - relaxed, gripping, and pointing - along with his walking stick and a teapot with moving handle and little cup. Also packed in are four little turtles and a premutated Splinter in a karate pose, along with the canister of mutagen that transformed them. I really like how the canister was done, as it's sculpted submerged in a puddle of ooze. Then we get into the more unique stuff. One is the Utrom, and this one is a different sculpt from the Utrom bot figure, being notably larger (1" tall) and looking quite disgruntled. The other is a Mouser, and we saw some of these in the original run of the Mirage line. The Mouser here stands 2 3/8" tall, and rather than being solid white, bears a metallic blue finish. It's also articulated, with hinged jaw, head, knees, and ankles, barbell neck, and swivel hips. Wouldn't mind seeing a Mouser multipack using this very sculpt. Splinter definitely turned out to be one of the most enjoyable figures in the line. He looks great, moves great, and has enough accessories to justify his price. He's showing up at Target now as part of a promotion for the upcoming Mutant Mayhem movie, and is very easy to find, but for those who haven't seen him, I feel it won't be long before he shows up everywhere else. - 7/9/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
