Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4-Pack Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)In 2008, NECA got the license to the original Mirage TMNT comics, and proceeded to put out a set of Turtle figures based off the first issue. Considered the pinnacle of Ninja Turtle toys, these figures have since become collectors' items, with the whole set often being worth above a thousand dollars. Now, with NECA doing Mirage again, they put out a whole new set of comic Turtles. The box for this set is much like the other four-packs, being a long box with an opening flap on the front, so you can see the figures inside. The art on the front, done by Kevin Eastman, depicts the Turtles facing off against the Shredder clones from the "Return to New York" arc, and it looks great. The inside also gives us a recreation of the final panel from it, where the brothers give a send-off to their greatest foe. On all other sides, we get photos of the figures, but for some reason, Raphael and Michelangelo's heads are swapped in them. My only issue is the massive amount of plastic ties inside that need to be cut out, and I wish NECA would do away with those already, especially with these big sets. When NECA announced they'd being doing newly-sculpted Turtles for the line rather than re-releasing the old figures, I expected them to do Kevin Eastman's designs. Instead, they did Jim Lawson's designs from the aforementioned "Return to New York" storyline. His designs are very similar to Eastman's, so it's still good. All four turtles have blocky heads with their bandana tails draped over their right shoulders, as well as different head sculpts for each. Leonardo and Raphael both have gritted teeth, with Leo's eyes being narrower, Donatello has a stoic expression, and Michelangelo has a grin. The expressions seem to be based off the older figures, and fit the characters well. There's no extra heads, but these ones can be popped on and off the bodies easily, so they can be swapped between one another. At 5 3/4" each, these guys aren't as big as I thought they would be, but they're still solid and a little chunky. Paul Harding did all the sculpting for this set, and they look very nice and accurate to the comic. All of the turtles share the same body, with the only difference in sculpting aside from the heads being the weapon storage on Leo and Don. There's also good texturing on the skin and shells, which arguably adds some realism to the sculpts. The paint is quite possibly the best I've seen on a NECA product, with clean lines and practically no bleed at all. The plastrons on each have different line work, with Raphael's being more scratched up than the others. Given his aggressiveness, it fits him well, and helps set him apart from Mikey. The turtles get some great articulation, and it's arguably better than any other turtle NECA's done. All four have barbell head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps, thighs, tails, and bandana tails, double-hinged elbows and knees, and ball-jointed hips. All of the joints get nice range, allowing for plenty of nice poses to be achieved. The one area I'd advise you to be mindful of are the biceps, as most of them were stuck tight when I got them out of the box, and they required hot water to get moving. Still, most of the joints move well, and you'll have a lot of fun finding new ways to pose these guys on the shelf. The number of accessories is pretty light, especially given the price, but it's enough for these guys. There are four extra sets of hands included - closed, grasping, flat palm, and sai gripping - and they swap easily. The turtles' signature weapons are included: Leonardo's katanas, Donatello's staff, Raphael's sai, and Michelangelo's nunchucks. All of the weapons look nice and fit into the hands easily, but I wish the nunchucks used bendable wires rather than strings. Adding on to these are three shurikens and a set of straight-back bandana tails, one for each turtle. And for Raphael specifically, there's his hood and a bandaged right arm that swaps at the shoulder. These can actually be used on any turtle, even the arm, since they all share the same base body. It's all good, but I wish some vertically-hinged gripping hands were included for better weapon poses, namely on Leonardo. After all this time, it's nice to get a set of Mirage Turtles that won't bankrupt you, and NECA and Paul Harding did a great job with this set. This set's Target-only for right now, but it's not too difficult to find, and I can see it eventually making its way to other retailers soon. - 7/23/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
