Toxie (Blue Pants) (Toxic Crusaders (Super7)) Review
Toxie (Blue Pants)
Toxic Crusaders (Super7) (Super7)Turning a gore-filled, non-family-friendly B-movie into a goofy children's cartoon? It sounds weird, but they did it, and it worked. Toxic Crusaders is arguably as recognizable as the original Toxic Avenger movie, assisted by a line of figures by Playmates. Years later, Super7 grabbed the license and started off with ReAction and a couple versions of an Ultimate Toxie, but now they're going all-in with the denizens of Tromaville in the Ultimates world, including their fourth Toxie Ultimate.

The packaging is simple, but uses colorful graphics, and shows off the figure well. The colors of the box underneath the slip cover are unique to each figure, with Toxie's being orange and green. There's no character bio on the back unfortunately, just a mock warning symbol. It's easy to get everything out; just remove some tape and a plastic strip.

Most of Toxie's sculpt is recycled from what we got before, but what's all new here is the head. The toy-inspired past Ultimate Toxie had a rather grotesque portrait with a bug eye and lumpy head. The toon-inspired new one still has the big eye and lumpiness, but he's much more friendlier-looking. The new head is spot-on to the cartoon, and the paint is practically flawless. For those who liked the toy-inspired portrait, it's still here, both with headband and without.

Toxie stands around 7", which is fitting for a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength, but now is where I bring up the biggest issue with the figure. As mentioned before, most of the figure reuses tooling from the past Toxies, meaning he doesn't get his toon attire. Cartoon Toxie's clothes weren't this tattered, and his tutu should be under his shirt, rather than over it. I get Super7 likes to reuse molds a lot (just look at all their GITD figures), but this guy really needed a new body. One positive is the colors, as they're very bold and cartoon-accurate, with little bleed or fuzziness. By the way, the bandolier and tutu can be removed from the figure easily, and since toon Toxie didn't wear a bandolier, he's likely to be displayed without it.

The articulation is decent, but with a couple issues. The head is a ball-joint with a ball in the head… and a ring in the neck? The lower part of the joint does get a bit of forward and back in the body, but the thick neck prevents the head from getting a lot of range. The rest is mostly standard, with swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, thighs, and shins, hinged elbows and knees, and an ab crunch. I wish the elbows and knees were redone to remove the pins, like they did with Lion-O; they would've been fine ten years ago, but not today. Better bend in the knees would've been nice too, since these can only barely get 90 degrees.

The accessories are mostly lifted from the past Toxies, but with a couple changes and new extras. There's three heads, two toy and one toon, and they swap with ease (and a little heat). Toxie's trusty mop is included, with a bit of slime on it and a removable flag. There's also the logo shield, and three grenades that clip onto the bandolier. Blobby gets a whole new sculpt here, and while I'm not too big on the expression, the furry texture is nice, and he can be plugged onto the bandolier. Lastly, Toxie now has interchangeable hands! You get your choice of gripping, closed, or relaxed hands, and they swap easily.

Toxie's a pretty fun figure overall. Granted, a toon-accurate body and polished articulation would've made him better, but he's definitely ideal for those who missed out on previous Toxies. It's odd that we haven't seen pre-orders for the next wave yet, especially since 2/3 of it was revealed in Toycollectr, but hopefully we'll get it sometime this year.
