Radiation Ranger (Toxic Crusaders (Super7)) Review
Radiation Ranger
Toxic Crusaders (Super7) (Super7)Every villain needs henchmen, nameless mooks who do all the dirty work for you. It's especially good if they're robots, since they can create tons of them to send out and get thrashed. Shredder had his Foot Soldiers, COBRA had their B.A.T.s, and Dr. Killemoff had these guys.

As with any good robotic hench, the Radiation Ranger's face is never shown, and if it was, it'd be all metal and circuitry. Super7 chose to recreate the Ranger's toy design, rather than its cartoon design like Toxie. They're wearing a gas mask connected to a life support backpack and whatever that thing on their chest is. The connecting wires are made out of a soft, rubbery material, and pop in and out easily. The backpack is separate from them in the box, but it pops into the two holes on the shoulders easily.

Standing 6 1/2" tall, the Ranger is a somewhat beefy figure, and the plastic used is solid and feels great in-hand. Since this is the toy design, they're not just yellow, blue, and gray, but also orange and green. All of the details are copied exactly from the original Playmates figures, but larger and with more paint. The suit is covered with wrinkles so the sculpt isn't too barebones, and the paint is mostly clean. Interestingly, the goggles have translucent plastic, and that's not something Super7 came up with; the original figure was like that too.

Being sculpted years after the original Toxie, the movement is a little nicer on this newer sculpt. RR gets swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, along with a barbell head, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, and a surprisingly decent ab crunch that allows them to lurch forward. There are a few limitations to the sculpt, such as the elbows, which can't reach 90 degrees, but you should be able to get some nice poses. The joints also move well, with the knees being tight enough to keep the figure stable, but not so tight that they can't move well. The head can pop off easily for some reason, despite there not being any extra heads. I guess it's in case you want to display them getting wrecked by the good guys.

All of the Ranger's arsenal from the original toy are included here, and it's not a lot of accessories, but it's enough to make it a fun figure. Four sets of hands are included - gripping, open, closed, and one to work with the rifle. The Radiation Rifle is nicely sculpted, but I don't like the lack of paint. This is supposed to be an updated version of the old toy, right? Then why not update the gun as well? The Ranger also gets a nuclear waste drum shield, and two glow-in-the-dark land mines that can be stored on the backpack. Unlike the gun, the shield actually gets more paint than before.

The Radiation Ranger is one really fun figure, thanks to a great sculpt with bold colors, nice movement, and army-building potential. Of course, they're $55 like most other Ultimates, but if I'm ever able to get him for less than that, I'd be much more tempted to build up my ranks.
