Grunt and Jersey Red Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Guess this means I can finally say the gang's all here. Grunt was among Bebop and Rocksteady's gang that was only present for the first season of the original cartoon, and his name is Grunt; they didn't have to change it to avoid coming into conflict with Disney like they did with Dopey and Dumbo. Grunt looks almost like someone out of Mad Max or something similar, with nothing but a harness covering his torso, a gray belt, metal wristcuffs and (presumably) kneepads, and a big mohawk. He's also pretty muscular, but not to the degree B&R would become after being mutated. Anyways, the sculpt for Grunt's figure was provided by Eric Barnett, and stands around 6 3/4" tall. He looks accurate to the show, and almost everything with painted "outlines" are sculpted as well, so he's not a flat sculpt. The harness is a separate piece of plastic not glued on at all to the body, and I guess you could remove it, but you'll have to pop off the head and arms to do so (something I wouldn't suggest doing without heat). The sunglasses can't be removed, and that's probably a good thing, since he has no painted pupils underneath them, resulting in creepy blank eyes. The paint is handled well with no bleed, but there is a but of fuzziness to the outlines. Making up the second half of this set is Jersey Red, another member of Bebop and Rocksteady's gang. She wasn't introduced in that five-episode first season like the others, but rather season three's "The Gang's All Here." Standing about 6" tall and also sculpted by Barnett, Jersey Red bears a fitting appearance for a punk chick in a gang: plus-sized, black tank top, jeans with red boots, and a funky hairdo. The head looks great not just because of how well her hair was handled, but also because of the expression. The raised eyebrow combined with the stern look reads "you got a problem with me?", and overall she looks just as accurate as Grunt does. She does suffer from some bleed unfortunately, mainly at the spikes on her tank top. These two are notably light on the "paint the back a darker color" cel shading, only being present on Grunt's harness and Red's jeans and boots. Both figures have nearly the same articulation, and it's what we usually expect out of this line. Grunt and Red get a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles, swivel waist, thighs, and shins, and ball-jointed hips. The knees are different on both, with Grunt getting double-hinged knees, and Red getting single-jointed swivel/hinges. While I had to heat up a couple of the extra hands, both figures move well for the most part, and you should be able to pull off some nice poses with them. It can be a little tricky to keep Red balanced, due to the design of her boots, so use a base if needed. While the articulation is ideal, I would've liked a joint at the base of the neck for Grunt; they could've blended it in well with his sculpt. Since Jersey Red wasn't around when the others were mutated, she doesn't get any extra parts other than hands, but Grunt gets a whole another upper body to recreate his mutant lizard form. Lizard Grunt looks great, with the even bigger mohawk, long tongue, and sharp claws. He pops on and off at the waist easily, and gets all the same points of articulation the human body does. There are gripping hands for both the human and mutant forms, but the mutant gripping hands are cast in the human skin tone, and they never bothered to fix it. I suppose a repaint wouldn't be too hard, I just need to find the matching colors. Other than the mutant torso for Grunt, there isn't a lot of accessories here. Grunt gets the aforementioned grips for both forms, but only the human ones will see any use, along with a sword for him to wield. Jersey Red gets three sets of hands: fists, grasping, and gun holding. Adding onto those are a laser gun and a spray can. There isn't a lot here, but it's not surprising given that these are minor characters. Curiously, one of the photos of Grunt on the box gives him an open right hand, something the figure doesn't actually come with. It's cool that NECA is willing to go deep with the TMNT license to give us minor characters from the show like these two, and even cooler that they're done well. It's a shame the rest of the (human) gang - Bebop, Rocksteady, and Scrag, were relegated to convention and Lootcrate exclusives, meaning even if one were able to get both gang sets through Target or other means, you can't complete the gang without spending more money than necessary. - 8/21/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
