Prowl (Animated) (Transformers - Legacy - Evolution) Review
Prowl (Animated)
Transformers - Legacy - Evolution (Hasbro)While I haven't consumed a whole lot of Transformers media, I will say the late-2000s "Animated" series by Cartoon Network is my favorite. The unique characterizations, great writing and art style, and noteworthy voice cast hit all the marks for me, and getting a more screen-accurate than usual toyline certainly helped. When news came out that it would become a part of the current Legacy line, I was hyped, and even more by the fact that my favorite character, Prowl, would be the first one.

When transitioning from just Legacy to Legacy "Evolution", the packaging colors went from purple to blue. The graphics and illustrations look great, and it's easy to get the figure freed up using some scissors. Yes, it's the plastic-free packaging Hasbro likes doing, but with some of their products using plastic in their boxes again, who knows if Transformers will do the same.

In the Legacy world, everything is done in the G1 art style, so the slender designs of Animated aren't replicated here. Designed by Sam Smith, Prowl's head is a square shape, as opposed to the elongated one he's supposed to have. Still, aspects of the original design such as the crest and blue visor are retained. Standing a bit over 5" tall, Smith did a good job merging the details of Prowl's Animated design with the G1 body type. Almost every detail of the base design is kept here, and there's a few other neat details are well, such as the meters on the back of his head. The legs notably have an asymmetrical design, but that's so the vehicle mode will look proper.

Unlike the police car colors of G1 Prowl, Animated Prowl has a black and gold color scheme matching the designs of police motorcycles in the show. That reigns true here, as Legacy Prowl has great colors matching his origin, and the paint is pretty clean as well, with little bleed. The lights on his forearms and the chest window are both translucent plastic, which I feel works great. For articulation, Prowl gets ball-jointed head and ankles, swivel/hinge shoulders and hips, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, and hinged elbows and knees. The part of the legs at the wheels can bend forward and back, allowing for more range.

Unlike my past Transformers reviews, I won't bore you all with the steps to converting Prowl from robot to vehicle, but I will say it's a little tricky and unusual. You have to turn the upper body and legs to the side as part of it, for one. Once the conversion is done, you'll have Prowl as a motorcycle, and he looks pretty good in this mode. Spanning about 4 3/4" lengthwise, the cycle is arguably scaled well enough to go with 3-5" figures, and I noticed a little port on what would be the back in bot mode. I'm not sure what's it for though. Amusingly, you can see part of his face through the window, a little drawback to making it translucent plastic. The kickstand helps keep the motorcycle up… somewhat.

In the show, Prowl's weapon of choice was a seemingly endless supply of throwing stars, so two of those are included here. The blades are exposed by turning the bottom of the stars, and when not in use, they can be attached to the legs/wheels through use of magnets, which keep them very securely in place. The left hand has a good grip on the weapon, but the wider grip of the right hand isn't as good.

It's surprising to see new Animated toys over ten years after the show ended, but Legacy pulled through, even if the style is different from the show. Prowl is a very nice looking figure, thanks to the great merging of the G1 and Animated styles, and he's quite fun to play with as well. A few other Animated characters have been leaked as part of the line as well, and I'm willing to get them all.
