Skulk and Trancula (Sectaurs) Review
Skulk and Trancula
Sectaurs (Coleco)Sectaurs had oddly complex characters. Take Skulk here: the sniveling, plug-ugly toady that often accompanies cartoon villains, he's secretly well versed in political intrigue, and also an excellent scout and trapper. Take into account his Quasimodo-esque origin story, and he reads more like a modern reboot than a c-list 80s property.
Anyway, dude's roughly the same height as anyone else in the line, but with beastlier extremities and the only fully insectile face in the line. The balljoints at the hips have far better range than the shoulders, but that's how this line rolls. The swivel neck and hinged knees round things out.
Paint is great as always, with the facial features picked out neatly, and some really nice airbrushing on the limbs.
The real draw with these guys is the accessories. The ubiquitous webgear (made partly out of actual webs, I'm sure) is unique to each character, capable of holding most of their equipment: in this case, a hip hanger for the short sword/long dagger, a chest holster for the holdout pistol, and a clip on the back to hold either the shield or the large dart. The harness looks a little ratty and patched up.
And then there's the animal companion, a giant bug. It's always giant bugs, really, but Skulk was one of only four characters with a full-on mount. Trancula is a furry, burly looking brute with a turtle-esque lower jaw under the mandibles. The eight eyes are cast in translucent orange with a bubbly textured interior, contrasting wonderfully with the swampy metallic green of the head and thorax.
The striped brown fur adds to the predatory appearance, and even the saddle horns are a little pointy. The legs and jaw are actually a glove, and it's one of the easier ones to work convincingly given the simple nature of the mechanism. Quite durable, too.
These things are always winners, but the deluxe riders really drive home what a luxury line this felt like 35 years ago. Skulk is the least flashy of the bunch, but there's something to be said for that.
