Back to School Gremlin Gremlins (Neca) (Neca)Fall is approaching, and the kids are already heading back to school, but it means nothing for us who are already out of school. To commemorate this time of year, NECA did a "back to school" Gremlin a few years back, and you can get ahold of it easily if you know where to look. This version of the Gremlin is based off, of all things, an old newsprint ad from when the movie was still new. Said ad is recreated for the figure, but in color, and it looks very nice. The rest of the packaging has a school theme, and all the graphics are pretty good, with a few references to the film. As usual, there's a few plastic ties to snip out to remove the figure, but that aside, it's easy to get all the stuff out. The Gremlin utilizes a mostly unchanged sculpt from the regular version, done by Jason Frailey, with the only change in tooling being the head, which now has a baseball cap permanently affixed to it (and I mean permanently, I ended up snapping it off, so it just rests there). The head can be popped off easily, so you can swap it for a hatless one from another Gremlin. The hat is fully painted with dark shades of red, white, and blue, and the paint is clean for the most part. Speaking of which, the Gremlin keeps the same level of paint as past releases, with great color blending and clean, consistent colors. At around 7" from feet to hat, the Gremlin is done up in a tailored shirt with blue stripes and sleeves, as well as jeans with a belt, out of which his tail is poking out. The attire comes from the very advertisement this figure is based off of, and looks very nice. There's nothing attaching them to the figure itself, and can all be removed, but you may have to pop off a few parts to do so. All the articulation is kept, with a barbell head, neck, chest, and ankles, swivel/hinge ears, shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and calves, ball-jointed hips, and a hinged jaw, and most of it isn't hindered by the clothing. The hips are a little tough to move at times due to the jeans being tightest around there. As a "back-to-school" Gremlins, there's a handful of school-themed accessories, all originating from the classic ad. Included are two textbooks sculpted together, a catcher's mitt, a bus stop sign, and a lunchbox. The lunchbox is a very nice piece, with Gizmo painted on the front, Stripe on the back, the Amblin logo on the sides, and the three rules about Mogwais on the bottom. It opens and closes too, which is a nice feature. Not coming from the ad is a baseball, which goes with the mitt, and an extra right hand designed to hold it. It's a great selection of accessories overall, and you can recreate the ad with everything. The back to school Gremlin is a unique variant that's executed very well, ranging from the tailored clothing to appropriate accessories, and will look pretty nice on the shelf with all your other Gremlins. The fact that NECA was willing to go this deep with the license is great, and shows what can be done if enough love is put into a property. - 9/13/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
