Synja Patrol Bot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) (Neca)When NECA first announced they'd be doing figures from The Last Ronin, I didn't expect them to go beyond the titular character, but now it's clear they're doing as much as possible with the license. Recently, we saw the release of the next figure in the line, the Synja, which is basically TLR's version of the robotic Foot Soldier from animated media. The packaging illustration was done by Ben Bishop, and it certainly looks nice, depicting three Synjas with different heads. The bio on the back is the same text from prior releases, and I would've preferred something unique for each character. This is the third figure in the line (fourth if you count the Target-exclusive Ronin repaint), but is numbered sixth on the spine. The art on the other side is meant to go with the mural began by the Ronins, but we'll need to wait for future releases to continue it. The Synja patrol bots had two different heads in the story; one with a gray visor and "mouth" speaker, and another with a red visor, antennae, and no mouth. Both heads are rendered well here, being sculpted by Paul Harding, and the paint is good too, with clean black lines and metallic finish on the gray parts. There is a third head which is a damaged version of the gray visor look, with an exposed gear on the side of the scalp, and a visible left eye that looks creepy as hell. This head is actually attached to a severed neck piece, but it can be popped off for use on the main body, and any other head can be popped onto that neck. Standing about 6 1/2" tall, the Synja sports a blocky, robotic design, with visible wires on the shoulders and a metal exterior spine. It's a design that's equal parts simple and complex, but the end result in figure form looks great, as if it jumped right off the page. The body is primarily a teal blue shade, with certain areas such as the chest and belt being a more saturated color. The paint is clean all around, and there's a couple scuffs here and there, showing that upholding the law isn't easy even if you're a cyborg. The Synja gets a good amount of articulation, with barbell head, neck (both attached and severed), and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, thighs, and shins, ball-jointed hips, and double-hinged knees. While the joints are a bit tight out of the box, with the wrists in particular needing hot water to get moving, they can achieve some pretty good poses. There's plenty of range in the joints, especially the head and chest, with extreme tilt perfect for dynamic poses. The arms can be popped apart at the shoulders and elbows, which may suggest that we'll be getting more battle-damaged pieces in the future. While there isn't as much accessories as the Ronins, the Synja still has some good extras. I already mentioned the extra heads and severed neck, and I would recommend heating up the heads before popping them on and off due to how tight they fit on the ball, but the red visor head was tough to pop on even after hot water was poured on it. Three sets of hands are included - grasping, gripping, and closed - and they swap with little resistance. For weaponry, the Synja gets a sword with sheath that plugs into the back, a laser pistol, and one of the head mousers from the fourth issue. I noticed the mouser has a port in the bottom, but who knows what it's for. Hidden on the bottom of the plastic tray is a sticker sheet with two different badges to use on the figure, but I don't think I'll be using either on this one. The Synja is a very fun figure, with great articulation, a decent amount of interchangeable parts, and plenty of army building potential. Heck, I don't army build and I'm tempted to grab at least two or three more of these. For now, it's a Best Buy exclusive, but it's not hard to get ahold of, and I suspect it'll be hitting other retailers soon. - 10/3/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
